Product Description

Product Description
What do you call the groove that runs between your nose and your mouth? What is the name for the stringy bits of a banana? What's the right word for the long white exhaust trail of an aeroplane? What is that thingummy called? The world is full of thingummies - things we ought to know the names for, probably think we do know the names for, but when it comes to it we don't. "The Thingummy" is a lighthearted but informative look at everything from a-line skirts to umbrellas. It provides us with the real names for many of those elusive thingummies complete with the history, myth and anecdote behind them. Grasp "The Thingummy" and you'll never grasp helplessly for words again.

From the Publisher
We all grasp helplessly for thingummies every day: 'Pass the thingummy..' 'where's that thingummy' or just for variation as we stammer for words: 'use the blasted whatchamacallit', even 'there's an itch in my doodah'. So how perfect to have a book to hand for those ever more frequent moments of inarticulacy. Buy it for yourself. Better, buy another as a kindness - we are none of us too young for the occasional senior moment. This will delight all wordsmiths. There are words here you never even knew you didn't know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Present Perfect, 10 Nov 2008
Thought this would make good present for hosts of weekend house party and so it proved - excellent icebreaker and other guests with age range of 10-88 all found something to interest them. Grandmother knew exactly what a chiffonier was, but hadn't a clue about dongles. The 10 year old was up to speed with his techie terminology but there were a host of other things he'd never even heard of - he was intrigued and so were older, cooler fellow guests. Well-written and amusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thingummy by Whatsisname, 4 Nov 2008

An original idea and a clever book.
No more whatsisnaming or thingummybobbing with this mini illustrated encyclopedia to give you the answers to the question "I wonder what that's called?".
This is an interesting and amusing read. Pick it for a few moments and come away with another gem with which you can impress you friends with the precision of your language.
Its a real bargain hardback that would grace any coffee table and help fill that stocking.

5.0 out of 5 stars thingummys explained, 30 Oct 2008
By A. J. Page (UK) - See all my reviews

This is such a fun book, wittily written with superb illustrations.

I'm just amazed that nobody has come up with this idea before.

In our house, we find ourselves more and more having to resort to using words such a 'doobery' to describe thingummys such as the TV or sky+ remote....and this book is full of simple things that we often don't know the proper name for.

It's a perfect Christmas present and I'm sure it will be a huge seller this year. The Thingummy

3.0 out of 5 stars An oddity
Just the sort of silly book to delve into when you have nothing better to do. It gives you snippets of info to show off to friends with.

Not a bad book to keep in the toilet. Can pick up for a few minutes at a time. I saw a review with the authors on TV and it sounded a bit better than is actually is. Read more
