I Give In 6 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Charlotte Stein's first collection of stories contains all of the ingredients that make me give in.

The first is fine writing. The simplest of details can open up a different view on a situation, or illuminate a character's deepest motivations. Her writing is subtle but precise; it gets under your skin. You find yourself thinking about a story long after you have finished reading, realising things that might not have occurred to you.

The second - total absence of anything tired or formulaic. Her characters find eroticism in some startling situations - in 'For You', one of the protagonists is terminally ill; in 'Phoned In' we assume the long-distance telephone lovers are agoraphobic, or at least suffering from some form of mental illness. Even when some of the better-known and loved erotic set-ups are invoked, there is an element of defying convention - in 'Just Be Good' the arresting cop is not macho or dominant, but teased into reaction by a minxy heroine and her friend.

The opening story is, in this sense, a statement of intent. In 'Because I Made You So', a professor and his student engage in some meta-analysis of the tropes of romantic fiction - before finally indulging in them. It is deliciously arch in a way that betrays the writer's own love of the genre, and we know straight away that we are with somebody who loves erotic romance, but is determined to approach it in her own way.

Which brings me to the third ingredient - the sex scenes take no prisoners (except the ones that do). There is something here for the fan of slow-burning sensuality, as well as no-holds-barred filthy hardcore deviant fornication. Whatever turns you on - or makes you give in - can be found within these covers.

But, as the narrator of the final story reminds us, in the end, we make ourselves give in. And if you fancy giving in, there are few finer ways to do it than by reading Charlotte Stein's book. Look out for her - she is going to be Big, with a capital B.

In The Things That Make Me Give In, Charlotte Stein tells fifteen stories that no one else could tell. Only she has the right voice for these quirky, super-compelling erogenous tales; only she holds the key to these inhibited but bold, self-conscious but passionate characters.

Who are these people? They are nervous, tender, lust-crazed, lovable outsiders who appear more real than the people of real life--and whose introverted erotic intensity might make rock stars, glamour models, and other outgoing types a little envious. They sometimes see their world in remarkable ways. But thanks to the author's narrative persuasiveness, we have no trouble understanding their outlook: their outlook instantly becomes ours.

Their affections are wrapped up in idiosyncratic, subjective near-antagonisms that often give a deliciously madcap, gamelike tint to the libidinous proceedings, as the author shapes their wary mating dances into previously undiscovered types of erotic tension. Their magical interdependencies are unfurled by relentlessly present narrators, who glide seamlessly back and forth from the engagingly goofy to the searingly sexy. Paragraphs reinvent themselves brilliantly, making sudden sideways turns from desperate to rebellious and earnest to flippant and back. Each story's evolution takes us confidently past its peculiar milestones, progressing rhythmically through the deeply involving long sentences and the tersely witty, off-the-wall short ones--all in Stein's unflaggingly distinctive voice. Every surprising step rings true, and it all works beautifully.

It isn't that Stein's characters are sexually captivating despite the weight of their personal awkwardness; it's that they're captivating because of it. In this collection, the author celebrates their insecurity as an avenue to erotic depth. And she does it differently each time--making this book, though blessed by its strong unifying elements, a richly varied assortment.

I am not entirely familiar with the Black Lace canon but even beginners can appreciate the wealth of this work. Interesting scenarios, crisp writing and a fresh perspective. Charlotte Stein creates both atmosphere and desire. Her imagination evokes many pleasing yet accessible encounters - fun, crazy and also, beguiling. Her heroines are real to the reader and the further objects of desire are tangible without being fake. I liked 'Phoned In', an interesting view on the oft used device of phone-sex scenarios. Also - 'Lessons', which takes a plausible situation much further than expected. This book is recommended - a stimulating and entertaining read.
