Product Description

Product Description

In "Things I Learned from Knitting" (whether I wanted to or not), Pearl Mc-Phee examines age-old aphorisms in light of knitting. From "Hope Springs Eternal" to "A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed" and "Birds Of A Feather Flock Together," Pearl-McPhee casts a fresh, off-beat light on these sayings. Presented in quick, punchy takes, each entry in this book calls out to be read aloud and shared with anyone who enjoys playing with yarn and needles.Pearl-McPhee's observations are hilarious; the situations she describes strike a familiar, "not you, too?" feeling in the heart of anyone who knits. Interspersed throughout the book are her notes on the things that "Knitting is still trying to teach me..." That no matter how well you knit, looking at your work too closely isn't helpful. It's like kissing with your eyes open. Nobody looks good that close up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and funny gem, 6 Sep 2008
By S. Butland - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stephanie Pearl McPhee's great gift as a writer is the way that she can write in a way that touches on both our humanity and our foolishness, and in a sense the fact that this is related to knitting is neither here nor there. But she is a knitter, and so this book is a delight for those of us who do the whole sticks-and-string thing too.
This little book is a series of vignettes about what Stephanie has mearned from knitting, and it's beautifully written and thought out. Although the Yarn Harlot likes to give the impression of being a bit of a scatterbrained ball of hopelessness, this book testifies to her thoughtfulness and honesty.
This is a perfect gift for a knitter. It reminds us that what we are doing is so much more than producing a pair of socks.

5.0 out of 5 stars This could have been me!, 9 Jul 2009
The giggle factor kicked in as soon as I opened this lovely little book. Stephanie is a true knitting addict - and must have been sitting on my shoulder when she wrote this! I was sitting on the train when I read this and, as ever when you are knitting or doing knitting related stuff while travelling, it invokes conversation. Read it!

3.0 out of 5 stars mum's opinion, 11 April 2009
By millbanker (Cheshire, England) - See all my reviews
I bought it for my 85 year old Mum. Perhaps she was too old for it! She didnt' seem very impressed with it, although she used to love knitting.
