Having read "Reading Lolita in Tehran" a year or so ago, it was not difficult to decide to read this latest book from the author, Azar Nafisi.

It was easy to read and difficult to put down. Any memories these days of earlier times in Iran are of interest to somebody who has little knowledge of the country other than what is heard on the news currently.

Iran is a beautiful country, full of beautiful literature and poetry. What has happened to it over the past century is distressing, to say the least.

The book tells lovingly of her homeland in Iran, and of her family; more especially of her father and her brother. Her relationship with a powerful and headstrong mother was far from easy. With her mother there were a number of difficulties which affected not only the author but also other close family members.

The book spans a number of periods of change leading up to the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Living conditions being very difficult in Iran, the author has spent many years in the United States with her husband and children.

Some beautiful memories here ... how one wishes that one day soon Iran will regain the glory that could be hers.

Both my wife and I knew Azar and her brother, and various other young Iranians when they appeared in Lancaster (Lancashire, England) during the 1960's. They had been sent by their respective parents to continue their education in a safer environment. None of us that were friends with them then knew too much about their personal situations, and reading this book has filled in a lot of the gaps that we were left with when they all moved on to the USA to continue in tertiary education. Mine is therefore not a detailed review of the book from a literary perception, but rather a "thank you" to Azar as an old friend for giving us all an understanding of the family traumas she experienced as a young girl. It is a very personal book, written by a courageous woman that actually touches you - read it!

Transparency 9 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a book of remarkable transparency written by a distinguished Iranian woman who has been buffeted both by momentous changes in her country and by the circumstances of her upbringing by an unstable mother.
It is written with great candour and honesty and is a book which is impossible to put down.
