Product Description

Back in the mid-90s the UK music scene was rocked by the mysterious disappearance of Richie Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers. Author Storm Constantine was intrigued by this story and found herself thinking ‘What if...?’ Thin Air is the novel that sprang from her ideas. While the characters in this book are not based upon any existing people, alive, dead or missing, the mystery was enough to inspire a story.

Dex is the front man of a successful band, and appears to have the perfect rock star life with his journalist partner, Jay. But Jay’s existence is shattered by Dex’s sudden disappearance. The mystery is never solved, and Dex is never found: alive or dead. Some years later, after Jay has got her life back together, strange events begin to unfold that suggest that Dex is still around. While it gradually becomes clear to Jay that there is more to the mystery than even she thought possible, malign forces begin to close in on her with the apparent intent of keeping the truth behind Dex’s disappearance forever hidden.

Jay can only follow the clues where they lead her, and that is into territory beyond normal human perception. In the bizarre town of Lestholme, she comes upon a community of the lost, people whose lives have been ruined by media attention, and it is in this surreal place that Jay must penetrate to the heart of the mystery, and discover what really happened to the man she loves, who vanished into thin air.

Capturing the ambience of the music scene of the 90s, Thin Air is one of Storm’s best-loved novels, and Immanion Press is proud to republish it after it has been unavailable for many years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Of disappearing acts and spooky mysteries 19 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Don't expect the Storm Constantine of the Wraeththu novels.
This is a mix of spooky, surreal mystery and showbiz social critique. It's unique, as are all Storm's works, and maybe one of the most intriguing. Dex, the neurotic and argumentative lead singer of a band suddenly disappears, leaving fans, producer, band colleagues in big trouble, and his girl friend, Jay, whit a broken heart; Jay is slowly healing when a strange feeling, prompted by odd coincidences, makes her think again of Dex. He learns from the producer that after so many fake sightings,Dex has been sighted by a reliable source: the producers want him for his lost songs which had been paid for and which, they suspect, he took whit himself.
Jay,now an investigative journalist, decides to make a most personal investigation on the mystery of Dex's disappearance.
Something of a love story, something of a mystery: this book is also studded whit wry notations of the musical showbiz world, when transgressive messages become a sham when uttered by those who've "made it big". They'd sound more sincere, in Jay's opinion, if they sang "of their swimming pool in L.A."
I think this book to be an intriguing read, revealing unsuspected facets of Storm Constantine's talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different 25 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Storm has written much better books than this one... But it's still really good. If you're looking for Storm's usual mix of mythology, gothic culture and slightly unnerving 'happy' endings, then this is not the book for you.
But if you're prepared to accept it as a step away from her usual thread, into the real world where sinister things happen to ordinary people, you won't be disappointed.
It's rare that a writer does this kind of thing without coming over all 'Stephen King', but Storm has managed it. She has her own, unique version of real-world macabre, that will keep you guessing all the way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 15 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book was a huge disappointment for me. I read her book Wraeththu, that is one of the best books I have read, and Thin Air is just not in the same league. The style is completely different in Thin Air compared to Wreaththu. I wondered for a while if she had let another author write the book for her. Still the book is not bad, just not very good. I believe the author can do much better than this.
