4.0 out of 5 stars Spenser saves the day! 1 May 2010
By T. Walker VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I'm a fan of Robert B Parker - he was an excellent writer, and sadly missed.
This is not the best of the Spenser films, but it rattles along at a fair pace. Spenser's policeman friend, Frank Belson, has lost his wife - she's been kidnapped. Belson gets shot by the kidnapper and spends the rest of the film in a coma, so it's down to our hero and Chollo, an Hispanic gunman of his aquaintance to save the day.
Well worth watching!

3.0 out of 5 stars The new Spenser! 27 Jun 2002
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is the first movie from a Robert B Parker Spenser novel in some time (actually it is the second, 'Small Vices' was the first but it has not been released on DVD, there is also a third 'Walking Shadow', also unavailable at time of writing). Joe Mantegna tries to fill the shoes of the late, great Robert Urich and nearly pulls it off. He has a charisma all his own but lacks Urich's charm, which was one of the plus points in his performances as Spenser. The story itself is a little dull but is never less than interesting. Hawk does not make an appearance (as he does in the other two Mantegna movies) but is ably substituted by Luis Guzman as Chollo, another great Parker creation. Not being a TV movie (it was made for cable) the movie is a lot grittier and violent than the TV series and this is no bad thing. It enables Mantegna to really get tough when necessary and he does it with great aplomb. I give this 3 out of 5 only marking it down because of the plodding plot. If the story were more interesting I would give it a 4 because it really is a fine try at bringing Parker's great detective to life. It would be good to see the other two surface at some point because the novels those are based on are two of Parker's best.

I was disappointed with this dvd, there were bad spots during the movie! Joe Mantegna makes a great Spencer, but this wasn't a great movie.
