Coming in on the end of the disco trend, the Divine ones pumps out a concept album. Slated by many, it came out around the same time as The Rose was on release, causing confusion for many between the hard rock Rose and disco Thighs and Whispers. The album includes "Big Noise from Winnetka", well known from live shows and a great cover of Jonny Bristol's "Hang on in there Baby". Also well hidden in this album are two great tracks - "Millwork" and "Rain", slow and thoughtful, they seem at odds with the other tracks. If you are a fan, buy it. If you are looking for an intro, or are relatively new to Midler, there are better examples of what the lady can do: Bette of Rose, No Frills and Broken Blossom.

I must admit I didnt expect a lot from this album when I bought it a few months ago. So imagine my surprise when it soon became my favourite album of hers! Every song is excellent, and I feel that the switches between disco and torch work very well on this album. Bette camps it up on tracks like "Knight In Black Leather", does the sexy on the beautiful "Hang On In There Baby" and then does low key but powerful ballads like "Millworker" and "Rain". If you like Bette, then I strongly recommend this album.

After reading the 2 reviews given to this album I decided to write my own because I very much liked this album and gave it a five star review.
Although I donnot disagree with the other reviews entirely, I must say that I was absolutely enchanted with the package and found that the heartrenching ballads rain and millworker integrate beautifully with the upbeat tempoed rest of the album.
Big noise is a fun vehicle for Miss M's stand up comedic style, my knight in black leather is an obvious plugging number for her gay audience which at the time the album was made had to be more descretely described.
The closing song Married Men fits Midlers voice perfectly, especially towards the end of the song.
The lyrics are pure camp. "he promises he'll marry you just a soon as his divorce comes through" we all heard that one before.
A final note on the album cover and art work there is only a single photographe of miss Midler in great shape and full make up with a blonde curly do in a beatifull Norma Kamali flesh colored strappless dress.
I think she looks absolutely ravashing on that shot and never looked more beautiful and the title "thighs and whispers" as oposed to the Bergman film "cries and whispers"is pure Midler Humour.
In conclusion I find that this is an important album in Bette Midlers career. And her collaboration with the very regreted Arif Maridin.
