Book Description

Arrested and put in a young offender's institute for using his precocious code-solving skills to steal money, things are looking bleak for Jonah Wish.

Then, in the dead of night, a gang of four teenagers break him out. They work for Nathaniel Coldhardt, debonair master criminal and leader of a team of highly trained teen thieves. Kids with amazing skills but no one who will miss them.

Jonah, a genius at cryptology, is their newest recruit. His talents are perfect for the next assignment Coldhardt has in mind - his most daring yet.

But before Jonah can turn his thoughts to deciphering the complex Egyption symbols and the treasures - or secrets - they hide, he has to decide if this is what he wants for himself. Coldhardt may have chosen him, but will he choose Coldhardt? And does he have any choice . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars It's really good - in an indiana jones way 31 July 2006
By J-o-j-o
I thought that this book was really good. It really deserves 4 and a half stars! Jonah is a believable character, who has a talent, for cryptography (puzzle and code cracking). Nathaniel Coldhardt, an aging, debonair master-criminal runs his own unique job creation scheme. He recruits teenagers with special skills - kids from the wrong side of the tracks. He trains them as ruthless, efficient professionals and employs them to undertake the daring crimes he's so good at planning. This book reminded me of Indiana Jones and his adventures. This is because the story is like his adventures, the whole, achaelogical artifact with mythical magical powers. But at the same time, appeals to people who like suspense. I think this book would appeal to young adults most.

I hope Stephen Cole will write a sequel, or more like this!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Young Adult adventure - It's Action Time! 24 Sept. 2013
By Frenchie TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had been worried that this book would glamorise crime because while I want my children to be entertained, I like they also retain some moral values. But strangely enough, Thieves like Us does not glamorise theft.
Nathaniel Coldhart is a charismatic and enigmatic man. He is also a mastermind thief with a touch of Robin Hood. Only people who deserve to be robbed -in his opinion - are robbed of their wealth. To help him in his grand plans, Coldhart enrols the help of young people he has 'saved' from a hellish life. They are his ''children''. They are five teenagers, each with a special talent. Con, Motti, Patch, Tye or Jonah. What Coldhart does might seem objectionable, in the sense that he uses their ''talents'' for his own end, but I do think that what he did was good, as he helped them focus and not drift into petty thief. I also think he cares about his ''children'' but life and hurts make it difficult for him to admit it. The same for each kid. They want to be loved and accepted, but are afraid to let go in case they are let down once more.
Well this is me, I like to analyse things. But children aged 12+ will love the book. It is ''Action Time'', kids with wits against evil adults, baddies with morals against baddies with none. The teenagers are lovable, have cheek in tongue but not rude. Despite their fears and doubts, they are also full of hope. And what is more exciting than going on the trail of ancient relics in quest of a recipe for immortality and a field trip to an underground cave full of ''magic mushrooms''or find yourself face to face to a supposedly immortal man?

As a parent, I found this read very refreshing and entertaining. So much that I just bought The Aztec Code, obviously, for my children but...

5.0 out of 5 stars Original, Yet Familiar 1 Feb. 2010
By FTW vgs
First of all, I am not the type that reads books all that often. But this book on the other hand, truly got my attention and it got me reading! The story is both original, yet familiar. You have somehow heard it before, but it is new in its own and exciting way.

The way the author describes emotion, how he depicts the way things look and how he describes the action second by second is truly an art form in itself; he does it perfectly. The way this story is told, the way he defines emotions and scenes makes this book come alive and the book makes you want to read on more. It truly did so with me...

If you are the kind of person who enjoys reading books filled with action, emotional drama, twists you would not expect and the occasional funny or witty comment, then this is a book right up your alley! This book has a lot of interesting and unique characters, which makes it both fun and interesting to read. I hope you enjoy it!
