Book Description

1 July 2010
In the crumbling city of Eloria, there is one indisputable fact: everyone has a price. Protestations of morality and better judgment have little meaning when confronted with the chance to obtain the unobtainable. The only question remaining is just how much a person is willing to sacrifice in order to win their heart's desire. Sevy has always been a quick study in the wicked ways of Eloria. She has no qualms about taking what she wants, and when the love of her life is mysteriously murdered, Sevy will stop at nothing to get him back. Elvish black magic, necromancy and demonic pacts are of little consequence if it means she can once again have her beloved at her side. But is she willing to murder her only friend to get the job done?

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant first novel 30 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
You get warned that the main character, Sevy, is a bitch - and she is - but she is that way for a reason, several in fact and though you may abhor her lack of morals and her mercurial temper you come to care for her in a strange, if slightly warped, way. Jarro is the swooningly handsome thief with a heart, oh dear that makes him sound terribly clichéd yet he has that pinch of spice that makes him much more. Then there's Revik, a dark elf with fire-red eyes and the terror of the bogey-man trailing him through the dank, crime-ridden streets of Eloria.
Ms Lehoux's style of writing is akin to a celtic knot; well designed lines of prose curving into a beautifully wrought tale taking you within itself and twining around the corners of your mind. I enjoyed the way her story unfolded through the eyes and minds of her characters as one by one you were told the tale through the differing perspectives of woman, man and dark elf. This literary device gave you glimpses of their backgrounds and insights into their personal lives, thoughts and feelings. You saw Eloria in its depravity and yet discovered there were slivers of hope and love lurking beneath the dross. You learned about the homelands and lore of the dark elves, shunned by humans as being below even the lowest guttersnipe in the city.
I don't want to give away too much (well anything really) but suffice it to say that you are going to be horrified, surprised, saddened and left wanting more when the tale reaches its last page. Yet fear not, there are more delectable tales just peeking over the horizon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent gritty fantasy 25 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
'Thief' is the first book in the Sevy series. Sevy is the main character in the series. She not a very likeable character, but she is interesting.

This is the first fantasy novel I've read in a while and I enjoyed it, it made me remember what is good about fantasy fiction. For one it invokes a well realised world and it does so gradually. You aren't dropped into an unfamiliar world, but one you get to know, page by page.

The story itself is well paced, it tells of Sevy's youth on the streets and how she leaves them. Her time on the streets serves her well, but she's not invulnerable so while I didn't particularly like her, she does make you want to know her more.

The writing is good, easy to read and for the most part well paced. The author has a relaxed, almost conversational style that is easy to read.

I did have a minor issue in that the transitions in the main sections of the book were a bit abrupt, I felt the transition could have been eased somewhat.

But that is a minor complaint, if you like gritty fantasy, then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, fast-paced, and gripping 11 Nov 2011
By Michelle Scott - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Sevy is a streetwise seventeen-year-old girl struggling to survive in the slums of a violent city. When she meets Jarro, the charming leader of a street gang, she is determined to win his heart by being the best thief he's ever seen. But unfortunately for Sevy, Jarro's jealous mistress isn't so pleased to have the young girl join the gang, and is determined to use the darkest magic imaginable to stop her.

I know when I'm enjoying a book when I get to the last page and wish that the story would continue on. This book grabbed me from the very first page and held me until the very last. Thief has all the elements of a captivating fantasy: truly dark magic, noble characters, a sinister villain, and an unpredictable plot. And even though I don't generally like romances, the relationship between Sevy and her beloved Jarro captivated me.

The book is grim and, especially at the end, quite graphic. However, the violence and gore were germane to the plot and setting. And although I admit that, at times, I was put off by the language (I'm never a fan of the c-word), but at the same time, it too reflected the grittiness of the city and its characters.

Thief is one of the best books I've read all year, and I look forward to reading the squeal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful drawing characters in this fantasy read! 13 Jun 2011

Sevy is a young girl and thief living in a city abandoned by most of the high class and nobility with nothing much left, as the factories have stopped too. Sevy tries to take care of her one friend, Trena, just to find she has turned to prostitution as her handler promises her all the things she wants. But, Sevy has her limits and wont join, not with this disgusting man. Sevy has crossed paths a few times with the gorgeous oceanic blue-eyed man Jarro and Jarro ends up helping Sevy in a most dire way. Sevy is looking for a friend and attaches herself with Jarro's unique group. Yet there is one here who doesn't like having Sevy around, out of jealousy maybe, who is Irea. She attempts to get to Sevy...one way or another... And what happens when the group dissolves for matters greater than just going separate ways?

This is a fantasy read with thieves close and front. With that comes the battles they fight with others in a desolate city to survive, so there are fighting scenes and action. We also have different creatures present too; dwarfs, elves, mysterious dark elves, pixies, and more. The book doesn't waste time with unnecessary complete depictions of all the different creatures, but the creatures are present and you know of them. We do learn of the stories of the Dark Elves through the book as Sevy's one closest friend is one. But are the stories really true?

I thought this book was set up in an interesting way to get more story and view of time. We have three sections which are different times of Sevy's life. First how Sevy meets Jarro and becomes part of the group. Second eight years later starting with Jarro's view, and leads into learning about Sevy's talents as a thief and the job they do together. In which you learn more of the love here as well. Then the third section, starting from a best friends view ~ Revik ~ and gets to the dangerous magic at hand. I really liked this aspect as I got to see and feel the characters grow through out the book with out any loss in the connections with them.

I didn't realize I was so attached with Sevy and her love until the end. I have to say I shed a few tears for them, and I don't do that. I'm not one to cry when reading a book. But this author did what I wanted her to do, yet desperately didn't want to see at the same time. I loved it! This is a way to take the chance with your characters and pushing them to be better along with making the readers love and feel for them.

Oh, I soooo enjoyed this read. I even already ordered up the second book for me, Shades of War. I'm really looking forward to getting more of this broken girl Sevy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, not sure why 19 Feb 2011
By KindleQueen - Published on Amazon.com

I really enjoyed the book from the moment I started reading but looking back I am not sure why. The plot doesn't really develop until at least 1/2 way through the book and the main character, Sevy is mostly unlikeable if not down right despicable. She's a tragic figure that I felt sorrow and pity for more than anything. She is bitter and cold throughout most of the book and comes across as almost bi-polar with all her mood swings. There was very little background as to why she was that way and I think it would have been interesting to flesh out the story of her childhood more and the tragedy that made her into the young woman she became.

Still for all that, I really enjoyed the book and thought it was a good read. It kept me engaged and eager to see where the story went. Its definitely has more of an edge than most of the fantasy stuff out there today and thats probably why I found it refreshing even though I kept wondering when the story would develop. There was plenty of action and all the characters were well developed and not just copies of the same person.
I highly recommend it in spite of the issues I had with the book and I believe Sarah-Jane Lehoux is a great writer and will only improve with time. I will definitely pick up any future books by her and recommend them to others.
