5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read 16 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
My 9yo son borrowed this book from his school library and I read it with him. But then I found it so gripping that I wanted more than just our father-and-son reading sessions with this book. I took it away and read it all to myself - and once I'd started, I couldn't put it down.

This is a superb book - accessible and not too challenging to read, but more gripping than any Harry Potter tome. On one level, it's a simple adventure story about a girl who wants to prove she's innocent of a crime she's been accused of. On another level, it's about the challenges of growing up and being accepted. And it's about so much more than that as well...

To put it simply, Malorie Blackman shows with this book that she is an author who really and truly understands her readers, and is able to give them what they want - a bit of real-life drama, the kind that any teenage school pupil can relate to; plus a nerve-jangling adventure, and a bit of psychology, showing how over-reacting to any bad situation will only make matters worse, with potentially catastrophic results...

All in all, a wonderful book that I can't recommend highly enough.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just ok 9 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
Thief is the fantastical tale of a girl, Lydia, who is wrongly accused of stealing a school trophy. Fantastical because she is thrown years into the future where she can see the error of the ways of her older self, embittered by the ostracism of the locals in the town she and her family have moved to. Lydia is then neatly and conveniently able to go back to her own time and change the future for the better. However, A Christmas Carol this is not. Malorie Blackman is a writer of some reputation, but this falls a long, long way short of being great writing. There is nothing particularly challenging or stretching about the text. The best that can be said is that the dramatic story might (might) keep an otherwise unengaged teen reader engaged (but that is a very long shot).

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyddy and Dan Henson 12 Jun 2011
By Boo
Format:Paperback
Thief is a great book about a family named the Henson's. They move to Tarwich-a country side village-away from the loud noises of cars and and street life in London. Lydia Henson struggles to settle in with the new environment but can't seeing as she lost her new BFF Frankie and is blamed for steeling the Sports cup from her new school, even though she is not guilty. When Lydia runs away from home, she is caught and thrown into the future. When she finds out about the future village of Tarwich, she meets people-some recognisable-others completely new. As new rules are made, Lydia seems more confused and cannot believe what has happened to her home. When something unbelieveable happens, Lydia finds herself in danger and needs to get home. The future is in her hands, and will Lyddy be able to change the future for the best? You'll have to find out...

Fantastic book, one of Malorie's best! Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping 24 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a story of how one girl Lydia, was deamonised and framed because of jealousy and spite. It is a gripping book and I would reccomend it to anyone who likes reading or dectective novels.I think the blurb is a bit misleading though.Lydia is a 12 year old girl who has moved from London to a town called Tarwich. She is then framed by the villain of the novel Anne Turner for stealing the Collivale cup.

Beware the end is quite mind boggling and although it is cliched it is quite surprising how Lydia finally wins the battle to prove she is innocent.

Having not read anything about this book before reading it, I was really surprised at how it started as a story about a girl isolated at school and developed into a sic fi adventure! Very unexpected.

4.0 out of 5 stars great read 22 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down even though it was a bit predictable and the plot in the future is a bit juvenile. I would recommend this book to teenagers and young adults.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Readable
I'm going to make this short and sweet: it was great. Got bored in some of the more futuristic parts, but hey, I'm not a big sci-fi fan. Overall, a very good read.
