FIGHTSTAR explodes from the gates on They Liked You Better with the intensity, fire and passion dialed up to dangerously high levels. They opt for a fierce, heavy approach laced with unpredictable post-hardcore flourishes, pummeling guitars, a tight rhythm section and enough stop-starts to keep you guessing. And there's the real beauty of FIGHTSTAR: the seemingly effortless unification of the fierce and the tender. Destined to be one of the most talked about bands in 2006, it's the enduring melodies, undeniable hooks and killer choruses that make FIGHTSTAR's debut such an a impressive release. Nine tracks of sophisticated, impassioned rock for those not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves.

Alright, so many people know Fightstar as Charlie Simpson's post-Busted band. However, just by checking out this CD the band as a whole prove once and for all that they're talented in their own right. Sure, charlie is an extremely talented musician who was wasted in Busted, and he's a brilliant front man for the band, but you can't possibly deny that Alex, Dan and Omar aren't equally driving forces in this band, and the combined vocals are superb. I missed out on the original EP, so I was thrilled when Deep Elm released this CD on their own label. All the tracks are brilliant, especially Amethyst and Palahnuik's Laughter, not the mention Hazy Eyes, which wasn't on the EP. A real treat!

Superb. 2 May 2010
By His Eminence - Published on Amazon.com

This band is outstanding and this album, absolutely crucial. Their lyrics are socially aware and responsible. I think they are considered Post-Hardcore or maybe 'Screamo', technically, but when they scream, there is a reason. (I don't like those labels and classifications so much). Have you ever been so angry, so upset, so frustrated that you just had to scream? I'm sure that you have, as have we all. The music is intense, punchy, melodic, throbbing, tranquil and violent, all at once, often in the same song. Amazing band. 100% cool, guaranteed. I also respect frontman Charlie Simpson for walking away from his stardom in a very, very successful pop music career to start Fightstar. Simpson has told some sources that his work with the UK pop band 'Busted' was a mistake and "was like torture." I can definitely agree that hearing 'Busted' is torture.
They Liked You Better When You Weren't in Busted 12 Jan. 2015
By Musicality - Published on Amazon.com

From teen heart throb in pop rock boyband Busted to new millennium post hardcore rock idol and frontman of one of the best British rock bands of the decade. Who would have thought it?
From being in secondary school I was more than aware of Busted's huge popularity though always disliked them having been hugely into Nirvana, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Blink 182 at the time. Finding their music and image contrived, deductive of better bands and lyrically nonsense and musically plain and like a disease I didn't want to know. In time and age I've come to see them as actually better than most of their pop rivals at the time.
The first time I heard Fightstar was monumental like the band I'd been waiting for all my life (without sounding too theatrical). Lyrics, vocals and melodies that connected and all before I saw though suspected through vocals this was Simpson and his band. Fightstar didn't have it easy as you might expect the pop prince millionaire starting a post hardcore band and venturing out into the common mucky world of rock, far from the world of Top of the Pops and popstar security.
Bottled at festivals and mocked though not leaving the stage or giving in Simpson and his band carried on coming back to headline the main stage of the very same festivals years later as triumphant rock heroes. This e.p is amazing and every single song is epic and one of the best albums I own. Clearly once heard the initial prejudices quickly fall away as a great record can't be denied.
If I only had to highlight half the album I'd say 'Paint Your Target'. Mono', 'Until Then' and 'Palahniuk's Laughter' and 'Lost Like Tears in the Rain' are the best. 'Palahniuk's Laughter' receiving a lot of video play due to huge interest but showing that this clearly isn't Busted like.

Fun Fact: The group not wanting the record to succeed in the charts off the back of Simpsons fame limited the number of copies and initially made having this album a rarity and unable to chart!

Album (weekly): UK#86

1.Paint Your Target: UK#9,
8.Hazy Eyes: UK#47.
