Anna Neagle portrays Amy, whose fame in the 1930s is such that songs are written about her and a worldwide fan club is organized. See RKO Book. Ms. Johnson's fame exacts a toll on her marriage to pilot Jim Mollison (Robert Newton), a daredevil in his own right who chafes at being overshadowed by his wife (the film is careful not cast Mollison in an envious light). The film ends with Amy's death while transporting a fighter plane from a defense factory to an RAF field, a tragedy which gives producer/director Herbert Wilcox ample opportunities to wave the Union Jack. ive only recently got in to anna neagle and i cant say enough what a wonderful actress she was she has moved me to tears on several occasions with her depictions of some of the great ladies from history
this film depicts the life of amy johnson, one of the first women to pilot a plane solo, it shows her struggles against the stereotypes of what a woman in the 30's was expected to be and her eventual tearing up of all the boundaries and boulders put in her way. it shows her triumphant first flight to australia from croydon as the first woman to do such a thing, through her marriage, her subsequent pain and bewilderment and divorce right through to her tragic death as a pilot during world war two
this film grabs you by the hair and grips you like only fantastic acting and subject can i cant reccomend this film enough around 900 times better than the recent remake of the life of amelia earhart, called amelia
this is a must buy for any dvd collection
