Angela's debut album is superb. As a member of Cooly's Hot Box she made some fantastic music. Now, stepping forward to front her own music she has produced a wonderful selection of songs, steeped in an old school soul/funk tradition. She is an excellent keyboardist, handling the Rhodes with aplomb, and has a voice that reminds me of a younger Jean Carne.
All the tunes are good, some are top notch. The picks for me are "Call", a lovely lilting melody. "Don't Wanna Be The One", this is an excellent mid-tempo number, has some lovely changes. "Rescue Me" is an excellent song, full stop.
I was lucky enough to see her on 23rd April at the Jazz Cafe in London, performing cuts from the album and with Cooly's, so most of the tunes I heard live first before the CD. Fantastic live, and some great production touches on the CD.
It's a keeper, I hope Angela gets the recognition she deserves with this CD!

I read the previous reviews with some intrepidation and chanced this purchase based upon the Coolys Hot Box release. What can I say - a very talented Lady, who oozes class. Buy it, play it and enjoy. Wonderful 21st century soul.

Angela Johnson's <They Don't Know> represents the coming of age for one of the lead singers from the underground soul faves Cooley's Hotbox. This is a record of consumate soul, deeply studied in the tradition of soul and gospel musics. Ms. Johnson is in full possession of this record, crafting 16 songs that are a fine showcase for her ample talents. As a musiscian, singer, songwriter and producer, Ms. Johnson shows that she has few peers with her breadth of talent. The grooves on the album are simple, familiar and fresh sounding. Free from the gloss and over- production of modern R&B, this album will have a long shelf life. Tracks of particular note are the title track "They don't know' which sounds like it could have fallen off a mid 70' Norman Connors record; I won't cry over you -- is a torchy soul blues number that contains immaculate vocals; "Money don't Grow on trees" is a funny catchy ditty filled with some funny little truths about self serving friends. Elsewhere the album has a consistent funky, soulful flow. Enjoy.
