Product Description

Product Description

This is the first book to deal exclusively with the Volunteers who died during the Easter Riisng of 1916. The book tells the stories of how, where and when each Volunteer died. It also includes those who died as a result of illness due to imprisonment after the Rising. Other casualties include civilians who have been mentioned in Rolls of Honour as well as unknown casualties who were killed in action.
The book contains over 300 photographs of the Volunteers, their graves and various plaques and memorials, as well as 4 maps.

From the Inside Flap

Over 60 Volunteers were killed in action during the Easter Rising. After the confusion of the fighting and its aftermath, it is understandable that there were discrepancies in the death lists published in various accounts, on memoriam cards and subsequently in the Rolls of Honour. Some people are mentioned under variations of a name; some are mentioned only by name with no further details; some are mentioned in one but not all death lists; and some who were killed in action are not mentioned in any account. The accuracy of the given death dates and locations is often in question.
They Died by Pearse's Side examines witness statements from fellow Volunteers, contemporary reports and other sources to provide information on how, where and when these Volunteers died. It clears up much of the confusion and will be a valuable source for the drawing up of a more accurate and comprehensive Roll of Honour as we approach the centenary of the Rising.

Excellent book 21 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
For anyone interested in the 1916 period of Irish History, this is a must. Ray Bateson knows his subject intimately, and this is obviously a labour of love for him. Even to think of the research involved is daunting. It must be the definitive work on the subject, and will be a invaluable source for scholars of the future. The illustrations alone are worth the price. As I say, if you are at all interested in the Easter Rising, buy this book!
