Product Description

Product Description
Deals with the controversial subject of children's book censorship. The story centres around an attempt to get "Huckleberry Finn" banned from use in an American school because of alleged inherent racism. This rapidly creates an explosive situation within the local community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Censorship!, 30 Mar 2007
By kehs (Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
When a small group of students and parents decide that Huckleberry Finn is racist, sexist, and immoral they demand that it be removed from reading lists and the school library. We hear how the school's head had used his authority to undermine the previous librarian and forced her to sacrifice her principles. What ensues is a fascinating debate on the rights and wrongs of book banning. Author Nat Hentoff manages to present all sides of the censorship argument in a fair manner, remaining respectful to all viewpoints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, and not only from an American perspective, 29 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I, too, read this book a good few years ago now, and it was really quite superb. Contrary to another comment here I found it to be a most engaging story in its own right - however, I should not have taken it as the kind of book to be read by a parent to a very young child. Possibly it could be enjoyed best by adults and older children of some intelligence and interest in the subject.

Its theme of the morality of censorship - explored particularly well in the debate scene - is of universal significance; despite its direct relevance to the US constitution, it has equal appeal to non-American readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars N.Hentoff relates the problems of racism and censorship, 3 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Nat Hentoff grapples with the problems of racial epithets in a book and how to treat that at school. He relates the problems the two groups(pro and con "Huck Finn") have by discussing whether to ban the book or not.He does that in a very unbiased way, so that every reader can form his own opinion about banning books from the school curriculum. To my mind it's very wrong to ban " Huckleberry Finn " , because it shows a very important part of the american history in the 19 th century, it shows the reality.I think, it would be the wrong way to ban the book, because then they would just ignore the problems which are still there in the relationship of Blacks and Whites. Everybody has the free choice to read what he wants and no authority has the right to decide, what every student has to read. Because:Who can be as objective and neutral to determine that ?!
