Product Description

BBC Review

It's been five years since Shawn Colvin's last album, discounting the obligatory contract-fulfilling Greatest Hits. The wait has been a long one, considering the sheer brilliance of 2001's 'Whole New You'.

Half a decade later, you would have thought that Colvin could have moved her sound on a little, as she did with each album before. However, 'These Four Walls', appears to be a weaker version of the last outing.

Not that it's without Colvin's usual slow-burning splendour. "Fill Me Up" has the sweet desperation of her most beautiful songs and it's joined on that pedestal by the whimsical "Summer Dress" and "The Bird's" off-kilter country.

There's little doubt that Colvin is at a point in her career when she can get away with a little free-wheeling, so we'll forgive her this one, but, given that she's won Grammys for her work before, one chance is all she's going to get. --Chris Long

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, 3 Oct 2006

This is Shawn Colvin's first album in quite sometime and is well worth the wait especially if you were not a fan of her previous release, Whole New You. If you are looking for an album of fast tempo numbers then this is not the album for you. It is a collection of reflective, introspective and thought provoking songs. There are a few upbeat songs such as Fill Me Up and Tuff Kid which are great, but the outstanding songs are Cinnamon Road, Even Here We Are, So Good To See You and the title track. It takes a good few listens and reading of the lyrics to really connect with this album and appreciate the gravity of the songs. The only slight disappointment was the cover of Words. But give this CD time and you will find your humming the songs without realising it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterclass in songwriting, 25 Sep 2006

This album is about as good as songwriting gets. It takes you through a whole range of emotions and characters almost like sitting through a really special movie. The first three tracks are just stunning. Even the throw away final cover version makes me smile. I used to go and see her live shows in London years ago and this album reminds me of just how special a talent she is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet return, 21 Sep 2006
This review is from: These Four Walls (Audio CD)
Shawn Colvin appeared at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London on 18 Sep and treated the audience to an acoustic set of warmth, wit and wistfulness: a glimpse of what appears on 'These Four Walls'. It's Colvin's most tender, wise and understated work yet. Guitar songs about life and living through it, and about dreaming a little bit too much for your own good! The tunes all ripple and rise, the words lull you then hit you. There are just a couple of up tempo tracks like 'The Bird' - but enjoy the peaceful majority. I listened back to 'Venetian Blue' straight away 'cause its one of those bittersweet things you don't want to end. American songwriting and performance at its best. I want to go and see her on tour again this November.
