5.0 out of 5 stars Modern day equivalent of the "hay box"., 17 Oct 2007
By J. Peter Maughan (East Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This is an up to date version of an old idea, the "hay box", where a cooking pot is put into an insulating wooden box filled with hay to continue slow cooking over a long period. There are many references on the Internet to "hay box" cooking.
With this device, food can start off on the hob (boiling for long enough to kill any bugs or make safe any beans) and then it can continue to cook for a very long time in its own heat within the insulating Thermos jacket.
The benefits are fuel saving, less steam in the kitchen and very tasty meals.
A similar idea is used by Durotherm cooking pans (from Kuhn Rikon of Switzerland) but they are much more expensive.
To try out retained heat cooking, cook spagetti in an ordinary 1 litre tall Thermos flask; just put in the spaghetti, fill with boiling water, put on the cap and wait for 20 minutes, or until cooked.
I now do nearly all my cooking in a Shuttle Chef. In fact I bought two.
For long cooking times, keep the Shuttle Chef quite full - that way there is a bigger store of heat. These devices really do keep in the heat for a long time so mind that you don't burn your mouth when you eat the food!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great device for long infusion stocks., 16 Nov 2007
By Mr. A. P. Armstrong "adey73" (North, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Although my Shuttle Chef arrived with the plastic on the inner lid broken, there was no structural problems. I heated my stock, skimmed the first foam then added veg brought it to a simmer added the lid (with the broken plastic) and placed in the outer thermos (surprised it doesn't have a locking mechanism or a clip) and let it sit for 12 hours. Perfectly infused beef stock that was still hot.

    1) Wish Amazon UK would stock the larger Shuttle Chefs like US does?
    2) Should have a lockable lid (with a better quality plastic handle).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, 10 Jul 2009
By Jellybean (London UK) - See all my reviews
Bought this from Amazon after reading rave reviews from Australian campers Now using it as an everyday item in the kitchen. When full of boiling water it will still be at 65C 12 hours later! The lid does not have any clamps so would need to be tied or taped down if you want to transport it full. There is a little heat leakage from the saucepan handles which stick out at the top of the Chef, this can be reduced by putting a folded tea towel on top. This UK version does not come with a recipe book as the instructions sell it for holding cooked food & not as a haybox cooker. It cooks fine - we've made rice, risotto, pasta, yoghurt, casseroles and cooked a 1kg turkey breast in it. Just check the online Australian and American sites for recipe ideas.
It also works on my induction hob.
My only complaint - why can't I buy any of the larger models in the UK?
