As far as I'm concerned this is a budget version of Noctua NH-D14. Here's where they saved the money:

- The mounting system and supplied tools. In general this is a fiddly cooler to fit and if you follow their instructions you'll need to take your motherboard out and strip it down.

- The NH-D14 comes with a syringe of NT-H1 thermal compound, which is great stuff. This cooler comes with 2g of Chill Factor in a sachet. Looked too cheap for me to apply. Advise you to get a syringe of some stuff you trust on the side.

- The NH-D14 comes with lots of fan accessories. Extensions, coupling leads, voltage regulation leads to further reduce RPM. The HR-02 Macho comes with just the TY-140. Mind you, the TY-140 is a GREAT fan and I'm picky about fans.

- Noctua has beautiful thoughtful packaging including a metal case badge.

If I were building a premium i7 rig, it'd be a hard choice. Unboxing an NH-D14 -- or any Noctua -- is such a delight. But the HR-02 Macho is every bit as good as the NH-D14 when considering cooling and noise only, so it was a perfect match for my i5 build.

Fitting onto an existing system is a hassle though. For a little extra they could have made that job a lot easier:

- Screws that don't fall out or shift into the wrong positions when you attempt to fit to a vertical motherboard.
- A smaller back plate to suit the typical hole in the motherboard tray.

When I bought this, there were no UK retailers selling it, but it had great reviews. I believe my one was sent from Germany.

I got this because if you have call RAM memory, your options for big coolers is limited. I was able to fit this in wituout issues and overclock my CPU! It is silent and does a great job of cooling.

I had been warned that this heatsink would be tricky to install, but despite all the pipes running around my CPU it was surprisingly easy. The unit works very well - fairly quiet, and very good temps.

Best Heatsink For The Money 28 Oct. 2011
By J. Bair - Published on Amazon.com

After finally upgrading to a 2500K, it was apparent very quickly that I needed to upgrade the heatsink, as the stock one was unable to even run at stock settings under full load. After looking around, I found a review on HardOCP of this heatsink and the immense value it provides for the money. The install is a bit laborious, but once installed, it runs fantastic. It's dead silent and cools great. Everything I wanted. =)

Also, the currently shipping models have the "new" brackets, so they work out of the box with ASRock and Asus motherboards.

Note: If you pick up this heatsink, be sure to get a long phillips head screwdriver in order to secure the heatsink. If you look, there's a hole at the top of the heatsink. This is used to access one of the two screws needed to secure it.

Awesome heat sink! 24 Jun. 2012

I bought this massive heat sink for use in an experimental 500 watt RF amplifier. I had to grind the convex heat sink base plate flat to fit the transistors correctly, but that was a fairly simple task. I mounted the transistors to the heat sink with a "C" shaped clamp I fabricated for the purpose. It works extremely well.

My initial seat-of-the pants test of the HR-02 was to use a small propane torch pointed against the bottom of the heat sink. The HR-02 absorbed and dumped the torch heat easily. Then I grabbed my larger propane torch and carefully repeated the test. I was surprised when I found that the base plate stayed cool enough to put my finger on after I quickly removed the torch, while the warm air exited the cooling fin stack, quickly returning the base plate to ambient temperature. I was impressed! Apparently this thing was carved from an iceberg.

Although the manufacturer probably would not approve my final use of the HR-02, and certainly not approve of my cruel tests of it, I think that if it can handle all that, then it will be up to the challenge of just about any CPU cooling job you can throw at it.

Big, hardy, quiet 22 July 2012

Nice cooler, very quiet, but much bigger than it looks in pictures! Install was pretty painless, aside from having to take the motherboard out. Sturdy mounting hardware, I took my PC on a 2000 mile roadtrip and it didn't budge (I've had heatsinks that broke the socket when subjected to the bumpiness of travel).

Great for the price, but make sure you measure your case. Sticks out about 6 3/4 inches from the motherboard with the fan installed.

Giant and cool 11 Mar. 2012

I am not overclocking or running the fan at high speeds. I just wanted a quiet computer. I tried one of the heavy duty corsair water coolers but it made too much noise for me and I wanted another option. The Macho has been a great alternative. It runs quiet and my temperatures are much better than my stock cooler. I do not have a very large case but it fits fine. Make sure you have a really long skinny screw driver to attach the last screw through the middle of the cooler.

Superbly awesome if you have the space 27 Feb. 2012

A CPU cooler that doesn't dissappoint in any respect.
140mm fan is dead quiet, it's massive size gives your custom, high-performance build its deserved looks.
The endcaps of 6 heatpipes at the top have a race-car-engine character and look awesome through a clear side-panel window and illumination.
Plan on getting low-profile RAM sticks for most motherboards, as there's lots of potential for overhang.
I recommend the HR-02 "Macho" with exposed copper pipes, over the HR-02 (chrome-plated model).
Plenty of websites give this cooler top marks for cooling efficiency and quietness for good reason.
