Jeremy Strong's books crackle with good humour and invention (Evening Standard )

Product Description

After falling overboard from his longboat, Sigurd the Viking finds himself in modern-day Flotby – a small English seaside town. Finding refuge in the aptly named Viking Hotel, Siggy's attempts to embrace modern ways end in disaster. His attempt at romance is no better off as even the course of true love doesn't run smoothly when Siggy's involved!

My 5 year old son and I have just finished reading There is a Viking in my Bed and found the entire book great fun. We laughed out loud together and really enjoyed the whole expereince. Each chapter brings to life the character of the Sigurd the Viking and how his Viking ways dont quite fit into todays life. There are 6 main characters which vividly come to life through the pages of the book. The plot is simple yet gripping.
A captivating book that would appeal to any child of 5+, we were compelled to finish it.

A viking lands upon the shore of modern day England through a dense fog and finds that he has been suddenly transported through time. His inepitude as a viking aboard the long boat with his seafaring shipmates becomes a big plus when he meets a family who run a hotel. He has to learn how to adapt quickly to modern life. Thus the tales revolve around this theme. What the author does so well is to make the viking a "big child" so that the children of the family can relate to him and in some way empathise and feel a little empowered. Beware, my daughter laughed so much at the antics of the vikings she was put out when the story neared its inevitable end.

Love these stories. Have read them to both my boys when they were 8 years old as transition books from
picture books to paperback novels. They both loved the light humour and crazy things that happen. The tale is one of those stories that satisfyingly answer the question "What would happen if..." I will be keeping this book to read to the Grandchildren.
