Harold Lee "Hal" Lindsey (born 1929) is a best-selling author, who is currently host of "The Hal Lindsey Report" TV program (for which he himself provides the financing). He formerly hosted the "International Intelligence Briefing" on TBN, but the show was removed as being too "pro-Israel"/"anti-Arab." Controversially, he has divorced three times and married four times. (His second wife, Jan, was the best-known, as she was featured on the back cover of his early books.) He has written many other books, including The Late Great Planet Earth; Satan Is Alive and Well on Planet Earth; The Terminal Generation; The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon; The Messiah [aka 'The Promise']; The Rapture; Planet Earth, 2000 A. D.; The Final Battle; Planet Earth: The Final Chapter; Vanished Into Thin Air, etc.
He wrote in the Introduction to this 1973 book, "The information you're about to read is more up-to-date than tomorrow's newspaper. I can say this with confidence because the facts and predictions .. are all taken from... the Book of Revelation in the Bible... For eighteen centuries the mysteries of the Book of Revelation remained largely unexplored. Churchmen of most faiths regarded it as a closed book. It was not until the nineteenth century that the renaissance of Revelation took place... On the shelves of my personal library I have at least twelve commentaries on the Book of Revelation... My book is not intended to replace these fine commentaries... Some writers have chosen to interpret each symbol quite literally. For example, a locust with the face of a man... I personally tend to think that God might utilize in his judgments some modern devices of man which the Apostle John was at a loss for words to describe nineteen centuries ago! In the case just mentioned, the locusts might symbolize an advanced kind of helicopters." (Pg. 15-16)
He states, "Daniel set forth a divinely ordained time period of 'seventy weeks' of years... The time period was like a great, divine 'time-clock' with 490 years of time marked off on it. A specific event was to mark the BEGINNING of this 490 years... When the Persian King... gave the Jews permission to leave their Babylonian captivity and restore and rebuild the city of Jerusalem, God's finger puched down on the stop watch and the 490-year alloted countdown began clicking off... We know the exact time of the fulfillment of this prophecy, because 483 years had transpired on the very day that Jesus presented Himself to the nation of Israel as their Messiah and was rejected by them and put to death... With these events, God's finger once again pushed in on the divine time-clock and the alloted time of Israel's special outreach... was stopped, SEVEN YEARS SHORT of the promised 490 years." (Pg. 100-101)
He suggests, "The white apocalyptic horseman of Revelation 6 is the European Antichrist. I personally believe that this man is alive somewhere in the world at this very moment!" (Pg. 103) He asserts, "I never cease to be amazed at how far afield many interpreters go when they approach the Book of Revelation. This particular passage [Rev 7:4-8] seems to drive some to new heights of imagination. Some say that these couldn't possibly be literal Jews... To all this sort of speculation I say, 'Why not?' ... So may I say loud and clear: the 144,000 described here are NOT Jehovah's Witnesses, or Mormon elders... they are Jews, Jews, Jews! It's amazing to realize that even though most Jews today don't know what tribe they stem from, God does, and He selects twelve thousand from each of the twelve tribes of Israel... The tribes certainly aren't lost to God!" (Pg. 120-121) He adds, "There is no doubt in my mind that [the European Economic Community is] the forerunner of the Revived Roman Empire which the prophet Daniel spoke about... Once the confederacy includes the ten nations of GOD'S CHOOSING, the group will begin to look for a leader powerful enough to make this new nation the nucleus of a one-world government. I believe that the Roman Antichrist of Revelation 13 is going to be that leader." (Pg. 186, 188)
He suggests about the New Jerusalem, "It may be that the Holy City will be suspended above the earth during the thousand-year Kingdom, and that the immortal believers will principally live there. This would help to explain the question of how mortal and immortal beings can live together in the Millennium, since the mortals (those believers who live through the Tribulation) will continue to marry, have children, and live ordinary lives. This, of course, won't be true of the immortal believers, since these saints will already have received their resurrection bodies. If this view is correct, then the city would have to be temporarily withdrawn when the earth is destroyed at the end of the Millennium." (Pg. 289)
Lindsey's inaccurate speculations elucidate his less specific comments from "Late Great," but many of them are just as inaccurate. (Is anyone else thinking of Deuteronomy 18:22?)

I remembered The Late, Great Planet Earth and its tie-in feature release from the late seventies, when Apocalypse fever was sweeping the nation in the wake of The Omen and related Anti-Christ lookalike thrillers. So I thought, after reading Left Behind and a few of its sequels, I would read a little more about it. Mr. Lindsey's literal readings of the prophecies are interesting at first, but soon become rather silly as he tries to explain the unexplainable. It did not convince me, I should have stayed with the direct source, the Bible.
