'There's More To Life Than This' is Ben's second studio album. Following the arrival of this huge talent to the mainstream with 'Welcome To The Best Years of Your Life', this second offering certainly marks a change in artistic direction. Where 'Welcome...' was populated with jazzy loops, 'There's more...' sits slightly closer to the house domain.
But Ben isn't simply a vocal talent, he's a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and whilst the procution of the album has been a collaboration throughout, Ben's is not short of talent in this respect. This carries the album and it feels every bit as complete as 'Welcome...'. All the soul and delicate string loops of 'Welcome' can still be found, with Ben's vocal prowess really best presented on 'Inflections' and 'Stronger'.
Delving a little into the production behind the album it quickly becomes clear why 'There's More...' has the feel of a slick house record. Midland's production on 'Stronger' is simply a masterpiece of intelligent house production and possibly forms the strongest piece of the album. But it's 'Something For The Weekend' which as the second track on the album quickly sets the flavor for the record. And I must profess on first hearing this track I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. It's now a favorite get up track; a go to for any get up requirements prior to the weekend.
'There's More To Life Than This' is a fine presentation of Ben and a series of interesting production collaborations with some of the finest talents around today. Don't miss this one.
