Book Description

27 Oct 2010
This is a brilliant new collection of stereotypes from the long running "Daily Telegraph" series. In this hilariously mordant, yet touchingly sympathetic, book, no aspect of English life is spared. Victoria Mather and Sue Macartney-Snape return in sparkling form to immortalize those very English characters and situations we come across every day. For all of us, there'll always be an England, and, we're afraid, this is it...Stereotypes include: The Post Office Queue; The Cheryl Cole Wannabe; The Rebellious Congregation; The Pub Quiz Team; The Comical Dog Show; The Hateful Hosts; The Milkman; The Village Organist; and, The Pet Funeral. Praise for previous collections: 'Mather and Macartney-Snape are not so much observers, more collectors, pinning their victims like butterflies in a display cabinet ...Very enjoyable' - Michael Parkinson. 'With consummate skill the authors have once again skewered our national smugness' - Nicky Haslam. 'A dazzling combination' - Jilly Cooper.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good present for people-watchers 15 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
This would be a very good present for anyone who reads the Saturday supplement to The Daily Telegraph, which is where these illustrations and wry vignettes of modern English stereotypes first appeared.

The book brings the the columns together in a well-chosen collection that will also amuse those who like to take a side-ways glance at everyday folk.

The descriptions tend to be limited to upper middle-class characters: but what did you expect from The Telegraph?

You will spend the following week trying to spot your own 'social stereotypes.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A blinder of a book as always 7 Dec 2010

Could not resist another new Social Stereotypes. Compulsive reading and although an avid reader in the Saturday Telegraph magazine I have to have a copy of the book. Totally wonderful and the best of English eccentricities. Fantastic.

This is a 'must have' book for your guests room - but don't read too many pages at one time - you'll crack a rib laughing!
