Product Description

Review

This is one of my favourite ever stories. The book uses pages with holes cut out so that you can see what is inside the old ladies stomach - yuck! Fabulous! (Betty Betty Bookmark)

This much loved traditional story provides a wealth of activities and is very cleverly constructed so that the holes in the book work both backwards and forwards. The story is about a huge old lady who accidentally swallows a fly then swallows a great many animals one by one as a remedy, until she finally ingests one to many. Repetition and build up are strong features of the story. It also contains steady rhythm and rhyme, and children love the inevitability of the denouement. (5 to 7 Educator 2005-02-01)

Review

This classic board book retells a childhood favourite and can be enjoyed by adults as well as toddlers. Young children love the brightly coloured pages with their ever growing holes. The various animals shown in the old lady's belly are guaranteed to have your toddler giggling enthusiastically. babyworld.co.uk 20050301

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic song to enjoy with your kids 14 Mar. 2003
By A Customer
Format:Board book
My Mum bought this for me when I was little and I loved the song. I forgot all about it until recently when I bought a Pete Seeger CD - 'Birds, Beasts, Bugs and Fishes (Little and Big)' - and it has this slightly dark but funny song on it. So I searched on Amazon and found the book I had when I was little. It's got holes in it so you can peek into the old lady's tummy to see all the animals she's gobbled up. Now my little girl enjoys singing the song with me about the old lady who swallowed the horse, cow, dog, cat, bird, spider and fly - perhaps she'll die?

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful 28 April 2005
By Ginan Tonic VINE VOICE
Format:Board book
There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly......and copious other creatures, much to the three year old's delight. Great pictures and you view what she has swallowed through a hole of ever increasing size. "Mama, they're in her tummy!" He loves running his finger round the wiggly die cut holes where the repeat lines appear. He loves giggling at the tickly spider. It's not the sort of book you need to encourage them to get involved with - they just do! A lovely version of this old classic song and one that gets the cry of "do it again" at least three times every time you read it. Great fun. Enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars There was a young toddler who swallowed a book 22 Feb. 2005
By A Customer
Format:Board book
This book has amazingly stood up to our son's chewing and battering since he was 6 months. It is one of his favourites. He loves to look back and forth as you relate the rhyme. The holes have made it much easier to turn the pages and he loves it when Daddy sings the song!

5.0 out of 5 stars There was an old lady who shallowed a fly 1 July 2003
Format:Board book
Excellent book, I enjoy it as much as my 2 year old daughter. This book has been around since I was small and in my eyes is a definite classic.
The pitures are bright and colourful and my daughter has been learning the animals along with the story too.
She still can't believe how fat the woman is at the end!!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Small!! 26 Jan. 2005
Format:Board book
I remember this book from my childhood and have seen it in shops, so i thought i would buy it for my little boy. When it arrived i was disappointed because it is so small. I was expecting a big A4 size book but it is only marginally bigger than a Cd case...........i guess you would call it pocket sized!
The story is as fabulous as ever, but because it is small the writing is crammed in and difficult to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic which hasn't dated 28 Aug. 2005
By A Customer
Format:Board book
A friend told me that at their toddler group they sing "she sneezed, of course!" at the end instead of the proper finale - what is the world coming to? We find that a serious tickling at every mention of the spider helps this story along nicely and stops Mummy getting bored.

4.0 out of 5 stars I read it when I was little and I'm fine! 14 Nov. 2006
Format:Board book
I have bought this for my two-year old daughter because I can remember this from when I was young as being one of my favourite books.

Why people are so concerned about the rhyme and death staggers me.

Is the world we live in now so policitically correct that our children shouldn't read humorous stories that talk about this.

Congratulations to those parents out there who have bought this book for their children, enjoy spending time reading it to/with them and tickling them whenever the spider appears.

We read it and I'm sure you, like me, haven't suffered because of it.

I honestly don't often write reviews/comments like this on products but Jeez, what is going on in the world?

Anyway, as I said, a great little book, I enjoyed it as a child and I can't wait to sit down with my little girl and enjoy it again with her.
