4.0 out of 5 stars dark difficult stuff 18 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
THis is the first time this album has been available for quite a while now and that can only be a good thing. I have heard it described as his most bleak album but compared to it's followup 'days in the wake' or 'palace brothers' as it was released as in the UK, 'there is no-one...' is much more upbeat. Oldham's palace era work has always been lo-fi but this has to rank as one of his most badly recorded albums. in terms of the songs though this is great. The opening 'idle hands are the devil's playthings' is a jaunty ode to the pleasures of all the things a man can do with his hands and is followed by a seven minute dirge called 'long before'. elsewhere '(i was drunk at) the pulpit' repeats the same chord for the whole song with lyrics which deal in an abstract way with... well being drunk at the pulpit. The best songs though are 'riding' and the gorgeous 'o lord are you in need' both of which are different versions to those on the 'lost blues' compilations. This is worth having if yr a fan of his stuff but might prove difficult for anyone who is only familiar with his more recent work.

5.0 out of 5 stars authenticity rocks 9 July 2004
Format:Audio CD
I love this album. The main reason is for the fifth track '(I was drunk at the ) pulpit'. It contains just one single chord but is such an interesting song. The words are wonderful as you would expect from a genius such as Will Oldham. I love 'Long Before' too, and cannot fault any of the album so will end on a note to say, BUY THIS!

I bought this on the strength of an excellent album by Bonnie Prince Billy. This is unbelievably poor.
