Book Description

4 Dec 2010
Henry and Catherine Tilney are content with their married life: a comfortable parsonage, their dogs, and one another. The idea of returning to Bath a year after they first met there seems like it can only add to their happiness; but Catherine finds that Bath still carries social dangers that she must learn to navigate. What is the nature of Henry's past relationship with a beautiful young woman? Why is a rakish baronet paying Catherine such particular attention? Is General Tilney going to marry the woman known in Bath as The Merry Widow—and what did she have to do with her husband's death? And will Henry ever be able to keep his Newfoundland out of the river? Revisit the winter pleasures of Georgian Bath with your favorite characters from Jane Austen's hilarious Northanger Abbey, and prepare for a bit of romance, a bit of mystery, and a very nice story indeed!

I think we have all read 'Northanger Abbey' and are aware of Catherine Morland and Henry Tilney. This tale takes place after they are married, and are taking a trip back to Bath. As well as original characters from the novel, be prepared to meet new characters as well.

Catherine and Henry are settled down to a life of bliss, indeed Henry sits reading 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' to Catherine, which this novel is interspersed with on occasion. Returning to Bath they find that General Tlney is planning to marry into the Beauclerk family. Sir Arthur Beauclerk died some while ago, and his widow wants to remarry favourably. At the same time Mrs Findlay, Sir Arthur's sister is accusing his family of murder. As Catherine gets pulled in we are led on a tale of a family that doesn't have much scruples and are manipulative. Propositions are made to Catherine herself for an out of marriage affair, and we also learn why Captain Tilney turned out how he did, but has a murder really been committed?

This is an enjoyable book, both well written, and with beautiful illustrations, that will appeal to any Austen fan. Although published by Girlebooks, books for women by women, to be honest this is perfectly okay for us males, after all we all love the wonderful stories of Jane Austen. There is also humour here in a gentle form, and this is great to put your feet up with and relax.

3.0 out of 5 stars In the style of Austen 13 July 2011

"Government," said Henry, endeavouring not to smile, "neither desires nor dares to interfere in such matters. There must be murder; and government cares not how much." Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen.

A follow-on to Northanger Abbey, written in early-19th-century style, but lacking the characterisation and observation that made Jane Austen so readable.

3.0 out of 5 stars They make a lovely couple 17 Feb 2013

Henry Tilney and Catherine Morland have now been happily married for a year and decide to revisit their old haunts in Bath. Accompanied by MacGuffin, their appealling Newfoundland dog, they set off in high spirits. Catherine will find it easier to navigate the social quicksands with her beloved Henry at her side and together with Henry's sister and her husband, they enjoy various engagements, dancing at the Pump Rooms, walking in the countryside and keeping a weather eye on the tyrannical General Tilney who appears to be making a fool of himself with the very recently widowed Lady Beauclerk. Will he propose to her? Did she really poison her husband as suggested by her sister-in-law? Does Catherine now have the social confidence to fend off the unsavoury Philip Beauclerk?

A gentle, affectionate and humorous tribute to Jane Austen's famous novel, Northanger Abbey, this book makes no attempt to follow slavishly in JA's footsteps (we are even allowed into the bedroom of the newly married couple where Henry reads his bride extracts from The Mysteries of Udolpho).

Fun.
