2.0 out of 5 stars Slightly pointless, 9 April 2005

This review is from: There Is a Light That Never Goes Out/Redondo Beach [DVD] (Audio CD)
A double-A side live single is a strange proposition at the best of times, but what makes this a rather pointless release is the fact that both There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and Redondo Beach are taken from Morrissey's Live At Earls Court album, released only a week after this single. Maybe the thinking here was to combine The Smith most famous non-hit-single with a 'new' cover version not available on any studio album, but it's difficult to image anyone buying this who wont be buying the Live At Earls Court album anyway.

As for the music There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is a good solid performance, with Morrissey actually singing the closing lines as introduced on the latter part of his 2004 tour, something he famously never used to do in live performances - even when back with The Smiths - though despite 2 guitarists the guitars do sound rather thin compared to Johnny Marr's live performances of the song. Redondo Beach also sounds fine, a cover of a Patti Smith song that amusingly in light of Morrissey's 'Reggae is vile' comments actually seems to be played in a reggae style.
B-Side audio Its Hard To Walk Tall When Your Small is a live version from the BBC Janice Long show, and though it's pleasant enough it's a rather strange decision to favour a song already released as a B-Side last year over the brand new song I'm Playing Easy To Get that was performed as part of the session.

The 2 videos on the DVD single are both of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - the first version is lifted straight from Morrissey's forthcoming Who Put The M In Manchester DVD, so fits into the realms of the slightly pointless again, while another version uses the same audio from the Manchester gig, but mixes in visual from other concerts (notably the Movie Festival, so watch out for departed guitarist Alain Whyte transforming into replacement Little Barrie) to make a promo video.
