Under-rated classic of super-heavy funk,

This truly is a solid James Brown LP, giving some astoundingly funky, hardcore grooves from the Godfather, and some extended versions of favourite tracks only found on compilations in shortened versions. The title track sees the JBs on startling harsh form, which is repeated on the extended jam 'Talking Loud and Saying Nothing'. The broad range of Brown's influences are shown here also, with 'I Need Help' showcasing the JBs talent for jazz playing, and the low key 'King Heroin' giving a slow, genre-defying groove, which guarantees it a place in anyone's Top Ten Brown tracks. Though some of the album is ballad-filler, the tracks that are worth owning are really worth owning.

I would buy this album for two pulsating tracks: King Heroin for it's spine tingling political narrative still relevant today as it was in the 70's and I Need Help for simply being another knock em out piece of JB super-funk.

James Brown always had a haphazard approach to his album releases, with very little cohesion between tracks a constant and unfortunate hallmark of his. Having said that, the stand out tracks on this album are more than enough to make it a worthwhile buy. Talkin' loud and Sayin' Nothing is as rough and tough as they come, while the title track deviates from the normal syncopated funk beat and timing, plays with it, and comes out the other side as one of the meanest JB tunes I've heard. Add on I'm a Greedy Man, I need Help for the other faster funky tunes, and the slower groove of Public Enemy No 1 and King Heroin, and what you have is a truly great album.
