Following 'Lost Souls' was always going to be a tough call. But the omens were good - not only one of 2000's standout albums, it was a debut LP of astonishing scope and quality.
'There Goes The Fear' more than repays that faith. It may take a few listens - it lacks the instant impact of 'Lost Souls' album tracks like 'Here It Comes' or 'Catch The Sun' - but when it establishes itself in your head, it is very hard to dislodge.
This is an astonishing single - it bears all the hallmarks of the band's early potential, whilst simultaneously taking them to a different level altogether. The stunning focal point of the track is the tumbling drumbeat that pulses and grows beneath the floating melody and then brings the track to a sensational end.
This is an amazing track from a band on the brink of something very big. And it makes mincemeat of The Hindu Times!

Anyone who heard Doves first album, Lost Souls will agree that it is a very special record, probably the best guitar record of 2000. Melancholic, soaring, deceptively simple yet beautifully arranged, there isn't a bad song on it. There Goes The Fear - the first single from new album The Last Broadcast - continues the great tradition and expands on it, in an epic 7 plus minutes of glory, like the Stone Roses reinterpreting The Cedar Room. I saw them recently at the Astoria: probably the best gig I have ever seen. All the old songs still sound fantastic, the new ones as good (if not better). Get this immediately, before they delete it on the day of release!

I've heard this sensational track on the radio. To me it gets better with each listen. For fans of 'Lost Souls' the good news: it's similar to material from that album. For those who are unaware of the Doves existence, then you will soon become aware. I predict that this single will reach the top ten and the album will be, as 'Lost Souls' already is, a essential piece of art. What else in contemporary music can compare with such magesty as this? It makes my nerves tingle. The inventiveness in this piece of music is amazing. It is so layered that each listen almost picks up a totally new song. Unbelievable. This is true music for the soul.
Also, if you like the Doves, please do yourself a favour and get 'Rock Bottom' by Robert Wyatt.

A shambling, sprawling, hugely enjoyable mess of noise and fun, reminiscent of the majestic Stone Roses in their more indulgent moments. Despite attempting to bury a very catchy melody beneath a wall of percussive and guitar sound, it can't stop the infectious groove from breaking through. Less introspective and serious than most tracks on Doves' (still wonderful) first album, and all the better for it. Hope the album lives up to this tasty opener!

Quite simply the greatest single of 2002 so far and one that every other artist will struggle to match. For those familiar with Doves, it will not disappoint, and for those new to the band, its epic scope and haunting melody will stick right in the back of the brain. And what's more, the chorus will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Songs haven't been this beautiful since the Stone Roses ruled the planet. Quite simply superb.
