Book Description

12 Mar 2012
Is it possible to be hugely blessed by God and still make a mess of your life? In this provocative, breathtakingly honest book on the Bible s infamous rascal, Samson, Jeff Lucas explores some vital principles for living life well. What is it we all really crave? Do good people do bad things? What do we do when we re disappointed? Are there clear steps towards success and disaster? Samson is a controversial figure -- some commentators can t forgive his morally challenged antics while others can see a reflection of Christ in parts of his story. Whatever your view, this book will shed new light on Samson s story, Israel s story, God Himself -- and your own story too. Divided into four smaller books, each centre around a pivotal part of Samson s life. With great insight and startling clarity Jeff takes us up close and personal so that we can imagine we are actually watching Samson s life unfold in front of us. Some of the topics covered include: propaganda, happiness, me -centredness, eroticism, accountability, anger, disappointment in people, Satan s schemes and how disaster eventually strikes. A provocative read, There Are No Strong People ultimately asks its readers to really think, re-evaluate and dig deeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucas at his best 29 Aug 2012
By Mr. Stephen Redman VINE VOICE
Consistent, engaging, thought provoking and deeply challenging, Jeff Lucas is a one-off. If I had to recommend only one speaker that anyone would enjoy and benefit from this would be the man - and he writes at least as well as he speaks.

I have had enough of slick para-psychology in the name of Christian writing - this is genuine ministry!

The pages fool you into thinking this is a riveting riot of fun, but that is how Lucas grabs and holds you! The truth is that you won't put this book down and forget it - your mind will be full of powerful images and edifying ideas.

Samson will never be the same again.

The chances are you will never be the same either.

Buy it for yourself and buy a second copy to give away - you will be doing someone a massive favour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Honest but somewhat provocative 7 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There are some good insights here from Jeff Lucas concerning the life of Samson, and the application of it to church life today. It is raw and honest. There's no pretence here - things can get messy. Even believers who are used by God can fall into sin and mess things up. But God uses such people nonetheless. The only thing that irked a little bit was the repeated references to smut and sexual innuendo in the Samson narrative from Lucas. No doubt it is there in the text (whether to the extent that Lucas suggests, I'm in no position to say), but how edifying can it be to bring it out so graphically? Lucas even talks about oral sex at one point. Granted it may be implicit in the narrative, and granted the Bible can be raw at times. Nonetheless, aren't we meant to think of whatever is pure and noble and lovely, etc. (Philippians 4:8)?

It was useful to learn that Jewish story telling veers toward hyperbole. It would be reasonable to factor this in to any discussion concerning biblical inerrancy. It was also heartening to be reminded at the end of the book that there really is only one strong man. And that of course is Jesus the Messiah. Albeit in a messy way, Samson is a shadowy type of Him. That is surely the redeeming value of the story of Samson.

This book is not for those of frail moral sensibilities. However, it could be just the thing for a young (male) believer struggling with sin and desperate for something real. The only problem would be whether some of the material that Lucas covers brings out more of the flesh than the things of the Spirit. It's a fine line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring 16 Aug 2012
This is an amazing book that I couldn't recommend more. Absolutely amazing. It is basically a Bible study of Samson's life and is really, really insightful. Lucas knows so much background about Samson's life and the significance of certain words in the text. He knows about the background of the Jewish people at the time and the importance of Samson's interactions with the Philistines. His understanding of the whole passage is immense but what is even more impressive is how he translates this Old Testament story into something really relevant to me today. He draws inspiring and often very challenging points out from a story that we all too often think is just about some strong guy being betrayed by a woman. This booked showed me that there is so much more to Samson's story than just that. He made a number of mistakes that we can learn from. And, the most encouraging thing, despite his mistakes God still used him and despite our mistakes, God will still use us too. I couldn't recommend this book more. It is so, so good. I want to read more by Jeff Lucas (I have started his book Grace Choices) and I want to read more books that have been written to delve into Scripture and offer us lay people the theological insight and background that comes from studying Hebrew (something which I never intend to do!). I definitely feel inspired!

Again, Jeff Lucas has given as a unique look at the Word of God. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants new perspective to the life of Samson and what we can learn about ourselves from his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are we more like Samson than we think? 10 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Thought provoking, and easy to apply to my own life. This a powerful and compelling understanding of human nature, with Samson as a realistic and very 'human' example, of 'act first, think later'. God blesses him nonetheless, through endless and admirable grace (undeserved favour).

It is so easy to be discouraged when trying to 'make a difference' in life using Christian principles....and therefore be tempted to give up. There is tremendous encouragement here, particularly Chapter 13............but I won't spoil it for you :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 14 Aug 2012
This book is honest and although at times may read some home truths it doesnt dilute the text we know as the Bible. It was refreshing to see Jeff Lucas write so openly and yet not lose the style of writing he has come to be known for. I would reccomend this book to anyone, but at times isnt for the faint hearted!
