Biography

From Loudon:

After the War (II) my father Loudon (II) came home with his bride Martha (I).1 My parents had sex and nine months later I was born albeit almost backwards.2

My youth was spent in Westchester County, New York and Beverly Hills, California.3 I remember being particularly happy when we lived in Southern California.4 However there was romantic agony - I had a tremendous crush on Liza… Read more in Amazon's Loudon Wainwright III Store

Product Description

From Amazon.com

Archetypal baby boomer, WASP troubadour, and fearless diarist Loudon Wainwright III cheerfully admits that his work is baldly autobiographical, and this 1989 chapter is among the liveliest and most emotionally complex installments. Who else could build a low-keyed country song that nails the title song's subject in every detail ("There is a nice big box of Kleenex/If you break down and start to bawl..."), acknowledging its curative potential while poking fun at the process? Elsewhere, he sifts through parental relationships ("Your Father's Car"), music videos, one-night stands, and, on the album's most powerful song "Thanksgiving," dysfunctional families. That song, graced by Richard Thompson's beautifully restrained electric guitar, compresses a family's tangled emotional history into a single night, with the nuance and richness of a John Updike story. --Sam Sutherland

This is about to be re-released and i strongly recommend buying it if you enjoy wryly funny songwriting which is moving and insightful. First released in the late 1980`s i think it`s his best album. As usual Loudon kicks himself in the ass a lot in these typically autobiographical songs. His melancholy demeanour breaks my heart as he`s such an endearing & likeable character.
This approach is however alleviated as usual with some upbeat, humorous songs about his time living in England while appearing on ` The Jasper Carrot show ` He sings about having his photo on ` Harry`s wall` and enduring freezing winter`s in the brilliant ` You don`t wanna know `
Darker songs like the authentically bluesy ` Fly Paper` and the title track show his more serious side but the`re always delivered with a knowing wink. After all the album begins with the lines.. ` I wonder why you love me baby, i hardly love myself at all. I think we`re both a little crazy. we need some therapy that`s all. Superb

A super album - one that I'll always play. Then again I'm almost Loudon's biggest fan - but that title is held by a 400 pound man!

Wonderful! Track 12, Fly Paper is awesome. Track nº 5, therapy say very much about our life nowadays. Track nº1 could only be thought by someone like Loudon. Amazing!
