Product Description

Product Description
This covers every aspect of counselling for HIV and AIDS, including bereavement counselling for relatives of HIV infected patients. It has examples illusrating theory and practice of counselling and a medical chapter by two AIDS researchers - Dr Margaret Johnson and Dr Bertie Squire. This handbook clearly describes the theory and practice of systemic HIV counselling (based on the systems approach which derives from family therapy). The book presents material on identifying, assessing and managing problems. The approach is sympathetic to time pressures in clinics or community agencies, and should help health care workers worldwide to develop counselling skills. Part 1 covers the theory and includes sections on defining psychological problems, counselling tasks and giving bad news. Part 2 describes the clinical application of the theory and includes chapters on counselling about HIV and other tests, managing secrecy-related problems and counselling specific groups such as the worried well and adolescents. Part 3 provides an overview of current medical perspectives. It is aimed at counsellors and health care workers worldwide - professionals who come into contact with HIV/AIDS patients. Because of the up-to-date approach and the medical chapter, the book should also be useful to GPs and nurses and consultants working with AIDS patients.
