This book is absolutely THE BEST!!! An absolute must for anyone working with groups in a support/theraputic role. When I lent it to my colleague she was blown away and has now got her own copy.

A truly essential read 19 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book has such a monumental reputation and has been previously reviewed by so many notable figures in the world of psychotherapy, I feel I can add very little. I merely wish to add my view that this book is an essential and inspiring resource for all therapists who have an interest in the practice of group psychotherapy and human dynamics in general

I bought this book in preparation for a course on Group Psychotherapy run by a respected counselling organisation which recommended it as pre-course reading matter. It's a big book (nearly 600 pages),and I've only read the first 65 or so, but I've already gained a lot from it.

I'm probably helped in finding it readable by (1)having done an introductory course in counselling; (2) having worked in the office of a counselling organisation. I haven't yet done counselling work myself.

The edition is 2005, so it's not super new; but there's a lot of experience in there, and the cover shows very good reviews.

advice-giving may reflect a resistance to more intimate engagement in which the group members attempt to manage relationships rather than to connect. "e;

A parataxic distortion occurs in an interpersonal situation when one person relates to another not on the basis of the realistic attributes of the other but on the basis of a personification existing chiefly in the formers own fantasy. "e;

But the evocation and expression of raw affect is not sufficient: it has to be transformed into a corrective emotional experience. For that to occur two conditions are required: (1) the members must experience the group as sufficiently safe and supportive so that these tensions may be openly expressed; (2) there must be sufficient engagement and honest feedback to permit effective reality testing. "e;
