4.0 out of 5 stars Get out the Highlighter pen! 27 July 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
For students of politics at degree level, this book is gold! If, like me, a compulsory module has been forced upon you on political science, this is more than adequate to help you bump up those marks. For essays it's particularly good, as each approach, including Marxism, Feminism, Behaviouralsim, Rational Choice and Normative Theory, (to name a few) is covered by a different contributor. (Great for bulking out your bibliography!) As well as approaches, there are also chapters on quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as wider issues such as Ontology and Epistemology, and the role of structure and agancy in political science. It's quite hard-going at first; the first few chapters are saturated with considerations, however once you get into it the format is very easy to digest covering pros and cons of each approach. All in all, worth buying; it was a compulsory text for my 2nd year module, and will be a good core text for any module on political science.

4.0 out of 5 stars Methods 11 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a very useful textbook for anyone wanting an introduction to the different types of methodology and methods applicable to the political science discipline. However, it is a book that has relevance to researchers interested in theory and methods across a much wider field than just political science.

5.0 out of 5 stars For many social scientists 3 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
I very much like this book. It gives you a terrific overview of the main approaches to political studies. This is relevant to social studies more generally at a post-graduate level. If you need to understand perspectives - buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's ok. 11 Mar 2011
By Dolly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are buying this book it is probably because you have to as it has been assigned as a text book for a course you are taking.

First of all, chapter 9 on epistemology and ontology is extremely poorly written. Too much crammed in to one chapter means they lack explanatory language and you learn very little. Also why is a chapter on ontology and epistemology chapter 9? You'd think it would be at the beginning of the book.

Secondly - the amount of spelling and grammatical errors is embarrassing. It is hard to take a book on political science seriously when all I see are amateur spelling and grammatical inconsistencies. Very poor!

Other than that, ok book. Have read better on this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Methods and theory a la UK 7 Oct 2013
By Mork - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was written in the mid-90s but is timeless in its presentation of the subject matter from an English perspective. The various authors do not try to bowl us over with overly technical jargon - concepts are explained clearly. This is a great addition to my methodological library!

It is not what I expect, however is a good book that present a new vision of the subject and it could be useful.
