Product Description

Product Description

In this ground-breaking book, Otto Scharmer invites us to see the world in new ways.

What we pay attention to, and how we pay attention both individually and collectively is key to what we create. What often prevents us from attending or ‘being present,’ is what Scharmer calls our blind spot, the inner place from which each of us operates. Learning to become aware of our blind spot is critical to bringing forth the profound systemic changes so needed in business and society today.

First introduced in Presence, the U methodology of leading profound change is expanded and deepened in Theory U. By moving through the "U" process we learn to connect to our essential Self in the realm of presenting a term coined by Scharmer that combines the present with sensing. Here we are able to see our own blind spot and pay attention in a way that allows us to experience the opening of our minds, our hearts, and our wills. Through this process we are able to shift our awareness to allow us to connect with our best future possibility and to realize it.

By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is an ambitious book. Leadership consultant and lecturer C. Otto Scharmer provides a theoretical framework for understanding the changes society faces and provides suggestions for institutional and personal transformation. Scharmer explains his process and its goals obsessively, even repetitively, walking you through multidisciplinary examples from his own experience, history and economics. He provides diagrams and breaks down his theories into numbered steps and rules. Still, you may find the book challenging, mainly because Scharmer is dealing with such large issues, but also because his ideas and vocabulary can get mystical. This book requires time and patience aplenty, but if you are open to such reflections, it could be for you. getAbstract recommends it to managers interested in personal change, organizational culture and futurism.

I find this one of the more important books I have read. I appreaciate the use of J. Campbell's Hero's Journey as a overall framework. I think comparing learning from the past, (Kolb, etc.) with learning from the emergin future interesting and informative. I think being able to move from learning from the past to learning from future and back an exciting idea.

This is an important and informative book. The book defines Theory U a model of looking at learning from the post, and learning from the future as it emerges. The book can seem like a hard read and times, and also daunting in the volume of its content. However, if you take the time to read the book, you will see its real value - well worth the effort! My copy is marked with tags of content that I will revisit and the theory of this book is something that I am sharing with colleagues. If you read "Presence" which set out the concept of Theory U, do read this book as it completes the journey.
