Product Description

Product Description

Many modern day musicians understand how to play their instruments or make music on the computer, but lack the basic knowledge of music theory necessary to take their music theory to the next level. "Music Theory for Computer Musicians" teaches DJs, gigging musicians, and electronic music producers the music theory concepts they need to become complete musicians. Concepts are taught using the MIDI keyboard environment and today's computer composing and recording software, such as Pro Tools, Reason, and Ableton Live. Based on a college course created by the author, the book provides a user-friendly explanation of music theory for those with no prior knowledge, with examples and plenty of illustrations. The companion CD includes audio examples to help illustrate the concepts learned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplicity Itself !, 30 May 2008
By A Customer (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Many people who use a computer to produce their music will eventually find their progress hampered if they lack a working understanding of music theory.

We all know when something we've written 'doesn't sound quite right' but without knowledge of the principles underlying musical composition it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact reason why. All the books I've seen on the subject however are exclusively geared to the classical / academic musician, and such books can be heavy-going and hard to understand.

This comprehensive gem of a book addresses that gap in clear, accessible language, enabling everyone to improve their composition skills. The examples and short exercises given are easy and enjoyable to follow, and the illustrations - using modern composing software that will be familiar to readers - are excellent. The book also comes with a CD of interesting musical examples of information given in the text.

A real must-have for all aspiring computer musicians, whether college students or home producers.

2.0 out of 5 stars False promises, 7 May 2009
By L. dawson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly, this book made me beleive that i would be able to understand music theory without having much , if any, previous music thoery knowledge, and it was targeted for the computer musician. I am under a quarter way through this book and i have had to refer to other books to find out what some of the theory jargon means and i am having to start right back from the begining of the book as i am totally lost and confused. The author describes midi sequencing but quickly loses track and discusses notation through score editiing in depth which to me is for the traditional musician who is progressing into utilising music computers. The book has alot of potential, but no real insight into what a computer musician understands and how are brains operate. In order for me to fully understand this book i will need more books on music theory just to understand what the author is talking about half the time. I would recommend to any computer musicians that your better off learning sound design, the sequencer your working with and chord/scales and arrangement.

However, get this book if your inspired creatively by total mental confusion
