Product Description

Review

'Theoretical frameworks are made accessible by the clear and conversational style of Dr Thompson. The inclusion of practice vignettes facilitate the integration of complex theory with 'real-life' situations encountered in social work practice. Dr Thompson goes beyond traditional theorising and looks to the deeper personal, social and cultural issues facing workers and clients. This will be a highly recommended text for students and practitioners.'

- Dr Jan Pascal, School of Social Work and Social Policy, La Trobe University, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.

Book Description

Neil Thompson explores the relationship between social work theory and practice in order to promote reflective practice, higher level thinking and evaluation of different theoretical positions

I am a final year social work student and recently brought this book. I found it very helpful for all of my work so far. It is worded well, easy to navigate through, academic, and up to date. I always use it now as one of my first points of reference. Explains theory well and makes the links to practice. A great book!

Have found other Thompson books ie. people skills and effective communication easy to read and very useful for working with students. I'm afraid I had trouble getting through this book and gettinbg to grips with it.Will give it another go in due course but its in the "heavy going" academic section for me so far!

This is a great all round book, which will see you through all 3 years of your social work degree. As is consistant with Neil Thompson books, it is easy to read but detailed. Definately worth purchasing and for a reasonable price.

This book, and I adore Thompson, is very intellectual, as with a lot of social work stuff (hello, M.Payne!) but does that really translate well into practice???? I think this over-intellectualises a profession which should be more straight-forward and person-centred, not so Sartre or Socrates! Lets just help and empower people for goodness-sake!!!!
