Format: Paperback
This is a great reference book for someone who is serious about art. I am currently studying Fine Art at degree level and just beginning to write my dissertation.

The book is packed with writings and interviews from a plethora of artists, making it a fantastic reference resource. Anyone who has tried to write a serious essay about an artist will know that it can be difficult sometimes to find valid information on the artist's actual viewpoint, and not a critic's opinion. Reading material that the artist has actually written (or said) can be absolutely invaluable. (Although even the artists themselves can be rather inconsistent at times!)

I don't think that you would necessarily sit and read this from start to end (unless you have a LOT of time on your hands: it is massive), but it is brilliant to dip into and extract the required information. I also like randomly picking things out of it as a lot of the articles are fascinating. (I did not realise how many artists wrote poetry either!)

Highly recommended.

I bought this for use when writing my thesis for BA(Hons) Fine Art and found it very useful and interesting. It covers a lot of topics with some well known artists' writing aswell. It proved to be invaluable to me.
I would also recommend Art in Theory 1900-2000: An Anthology of Changing Ideas if you are studying artists within that period.
