Book Description

The Summa Theologica (Latin: "Summary of Theology" or "Highest Theology") is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274). It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of the time. It summarizes the reasoning of all points of Christian theology, which before the Protestant Reformation subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; God's creation, Man; Man's purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinquae viae (Latin: five ways). Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine of Hippo, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish, Muslim and ancient pagan scholars.

This is an electronic edition of the complete book and includes an author biography. This book features a table of contents linked to every chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic presentation of the Catholic Faith 29 Mar. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Summa Theologica is too hefty to carry around, but this Kindle version makes it possible. It is a good translation, with a well thought out transition to the Kindle format, with a useful article-by-article contents section, allowing you to go straight to the section you want. The text is also clear, crisp and easy to read.
There is nothing to really complain about with this Kindle book, except that the text itself is a difficult read with many philosophical concepts which are simply assumed.
Recommended to all those studying Medieval Philosophy and Theology, and those who wish to really get to grips with the thought of Thomas Aquinas. It is a work of sheer genius and a classic of western Christian thought which has stood the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading Summa 9 Jan. 2013
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
A few weeks ago, after nearly three and a half years of on and off reading, I finally finished St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica. It is a monumental work, which in printed form extends over five volumes and three thousand densely printed pages. So it is not surprising that it took me this long to finish it. The fact is, though, that I probably would have never ventured into reading it cover to cover in the first place were it not for electronic publishing. The printed version costs $150, which is not actually much considering that most college textbooks these days can cost up to twice that much - if not more. The Kindle edition, on the other hand, costs 99 cents. Yes, it costs less than a dollar. However, it wasn't the price that made me buy it and read it, it was the convenience of electronic form, which made it incredibly portable and accessible. Over the years I would be reading Summa on my Kindle, iPhone, iPad, and in all sorts of common and unlikely places - my desk, my bed, while waiting for my haircut, while waiting for the plane to take off, on the elliptical machine in the gym, while listening to a boring lecture, and sometimes even while waiting for the light to turn green at the traffic stop. (I know, I know.)

Summa is not an easy read by any stretch of imagination. It is a densely argued treatise on almost all topics of Christian theology. It is also written in terms of concepts and categories derived form Aristotelian and Medieval philosophy, which are largely unfamiliar to the modern readers. Reading it can oftentimes feel like going through a large advanced mathematics textbook, with all the proofs and carefully precise reasoning that this entails. I knew all of this fully well before taking this plunge, but it did not deter me.

5.0 out of 5 stars The seminal work of Catholic Theology 18 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Saint Thomas Aquinas was responsible for the fusion of Aristotelian philosophy and the theology of the Catholic church at a time when the work of Aristotle was being rediscovered by Western European scholars following the so-called "Dark Ages". This work follows a very easy to read format, however not often in very easy to read sentences, which can be taken in small steps in order to read, digest, ponder and return for more.

I would recommend this to anybody who wants to improve their logical analysis of faith.

3.0 out of 5 stars extremely erudite 16 Feb. 2014

very difficult to follow but having read it only once so far I feel that I have not really done it justice until I have studied it much more deeply. I cannot imagine that I will be able to cope with the content without many more readings and study. However I will try to persevere
