We all love the maverick detective who gets results despite bureacracy and Carlyle fits that bill perfectly. A believable plot involving Mossad assassins on the streets of London, diplomatic incidents and general carnage, a great read, highly recommended (but best read the other books first!)

This is up to his usual standard , good plot and characters as always, inspector Carlyle is as maverick and awkward as always. I think these books would make a good T.V series!

This is the fifth Carlyle book in pretty short order. I've enjoyed the series, Carlyle's the likeable flawed character you get in this kind of Krimi, London is well-evoked. Eastern European villains, a loveable London rogue, some insight into police relationships with the criminal underworld. But it's the body count in this one that is just so relentless and depressing. Maybe there are this number of killings in London - although a cursory google search suggested there were 89 in all of last year, half of which happened in this book then. And I know the star character can only get killed off at the end of a series but Carlyle is defying death or serious injury at a rate of knots that's becoming absurd and detracting from the tale. And what's the obsession with murders in hotels? There's a sixth one out this month which I'll probably try but will be looking for a higher standard.

I have liked all the previous Carlyle books - this one is the best so far. The 'tone' has agreeably softened, so that, whilst extreme things happen, they are described in a less unnecessarily graphic manner. I regard these books as being like Luther on the TV - no need to consider if the plots/action are believable - they are just enjoyable in their own right. Characters are good, and developing, and the sense of that particular area of Central London is very well evoked. Just one note to James: the frequency and level of detail of the coffee/pastries events has become a bit tiresome!

A great read from James Craig, with John Carlyle involved in a complex plot which features arms dealers, terrorists and the Mossad. Exciting and strongly recommended.

The book is a great read, the characters are believable and the plot gripping, however there were too many deaths for my liking! Inspector Carlyle seems a very real person.
