Product Description

Review

'A profound, yet intimate insight into modern day Iran. This is a book that reveals both the beauty, history and love that is Iran, and the horror and hatred that infects some of those who seek to dominate it. A wonderful book.' --Jon Snow, Channel 4 News

'What makes Bahari's account so readable is not only his sense of fair play - he tries to understand the motivations of the regime, and of his torturer - but also his keen sense of fun and humour.' --The Sunday Times

Product Description

Maziar Bahari left London in June 2009 to cover Iran's presidential election, believing he d return to his pregnant fiancée, Paola, in just a few days, a week at most. In fact he would spend the next three months in Iran's most notorious prison, enduring brutal interrogation sessions while terrible threats were made to his family. Gripping and masterfully told, Then They Came for Me delves into Iran's history of oppression, and details how the democratic impulses of the youth are violently oppressed by a government that grows ever more totalitarian. An intimate account of contemporary Iran, it is also the moving story of one family's extraordinary courage in the face of repression.

This is a wonderful book, which operates on several levels.

If you take it simply as a story, then you'll find it a jolly good read. Maziar's life, his family history, his adventures in prison, his family's courage, and his ultimate deliverance - all this makes a riveting, satisfying and very moving story.

Secondly, if you are interested in international relations and the recent history of Iran, then the book also provides a fascinating and unique insight.

And finally, the book provides a glimpse of how delusional people can become if they are brainwashed and deprive themselves of contact with the outside world. Through the questions he asks, Maziar's prison interrogator reveals his beliefs and understanding of the west. The picture of the west this man carries around with him is truly astonishing, and this especially applies to his understanding of relations between the sexes.

Worth reading for any one of these aspects alone. But put them together and you have a winner. Thoroughly recommended.

Terry Waite was quoted as saying that the real prisoners were those who held him captive. The same applies to this compelling account of a journalist being held without trial and facing interrogation on trumped up charges. He calls his interrogator Rosewater, and his description of this man, who is locked in a world of paranoid conspiracy theories recalls Terry Waite's words. The writing is superb and one heart goes out to Bahari in a way that recalls Solzehnitzin and Primo Levi.Highly recommended.

I have had previous little interest in Iran or it's affairs. I first heard some extracts on Radio 4 (book of the week) and became captivated. I loved the interplay between prisoner and capture.
The book does go into some details about recent Iranian history, which may deter some, however I found it well explained and I'm now glued to any media reports about Iran. He gets arrested and that's when it gets interesting. The mind-games are compelling, but what really stands out is the complete ignorance of the torturer and the system. Let me point out, it's not quite electrodes attached to genitals, but the author is a brave man. It also highlights the fine line foreign journalists tread when reporting in horrible regimes.
Finally, I would like to thank Mr Bahari for opening my eyes.
