Product Description

Book Description

A brilliantly witty and charmingly grisly murder mystery from the author of The Act of Roger Murgatroyd and A Mysterious Affair of Style.

Product Description

The writer and professional controversialist Gustav Slavorigin is murdered in the small Swiss town of Meiringen during its annual Sherlock Holmes Festival, his body discovered with an arrow through the heart. With a price of ten million dollars on Slavorigin's head, almost none of the Festival's guests can be regarded as above suspicion. Except Evadne Mount, of course, the stubborn amateur sleuth and bestselling crime novelist from Gilbert Adair's The Act of Roger Murgatroyd and A Mysterious Affair of Style. Neither of those two cases, however, prepared her for the jaw-dropping twists of this new investigation, which climaxes at Meiringen's principal tourist attraction, the Reichenbach Falls - the site of Holmes's fatal confrontation with his nemesis, Moriarty . . .

this book, which is the the final part in the trilogy is awful. it has none of the off the wall humour of the earlier two. i gave up reading it as i wasnt sure what was going on, what it was about or what the author was thinking. i guess it must have been a filler to make sure he fulfilled his book publishing contract.
avoid, this book has no redeeming qualities.

I picked this up thinking it would be third of the Evadne stories. I had enjoyed the first two as lightweight fluff type reading and was looking forward to another. But very quickly it became apparant that this was not going to be in the same vein as those. Instead it comes across as the author writing biographically but in the voice of the author of the Evadne stories who is not him. I know that sounds confusing but that is this book. It's actually well written but it's really not what it makes you think it is or what you expect it to be.

If I had known when I picked it up that it was going to be like this then I probably wouldn't have read it as I am more a lightweight detective kind of gal. But having realised it was all going twisty I stuck with it and am glad I did.

Don't buy this if you're expecting an Evadne Mount mystery in the style of the previous two titles. This was just "weird", combining a kind of reality (Gilbert Adair is a character in the story) with the fictional character we already know (Evadne Mount) ... and there's little Mount at that. I don't think I found anything even slightly amusing but I perservered until the end, despite a rant about the USA and 9-11. Generally, very disappointed.
