Any compilation such as this one, practically by definition, is taste-dependent: every listener, except for those who are complete novices, will have her/his own favorites and will miss those that aren't included.
Most of the usual suspects are here, with a couple of notable omissions: while the majority of the singles are included, "Whisky Train", "Simple Sister", and "Strong as Samson" aren't. Each of Procol's LPs is represented, but "Home" only by "Your Own Choice", not a natural selection when the aforementioned "Train" was available, and "Whaling Stories" was a much more important cut on that LP.
The set list is pretty safe, though, and it might have been nice to hear something besides the usual one-two combination of "Quite Rightly So" and "Shine On Brightly"--how about "Magdalene"? "Broken Barricades" is a fine song, but several of the other cuts would have been a nice surprise--how about "Luskus Delph", for instance? "Pandora's Box" can't measure up to either "The Unquiet Zone" or "Fool's Gold", in my humble opinion, and I would dearly love to hear something from the "Edmonton" disc besides the overly-familiar "Conquistador".
Those of us, and I guiltily include myself, who haven't kept up with the band's latest incarnation, will be happy to hear the two recent live cuts: "Wall Street Blues" from "Well's On Fire" features a cogent introductory commentary by the ever-eloquent Commander, and "Barnyard Stories", revitalized from its original form on "Home", makes a strong case for the continuing strength of this evergreen band.
The sound on every track is up to the very high standard set by the "40th Anniversary Series" from Salvo, so I have nothing but praise for the production side of things.
A very decent one-disc sampler of the near-best of Procol. Those who want a bigger, better selection are advised to seek out "Secrets of the Hive", a 2-CD compilation, also from the fine folks at Salvo.
