Product Description

CD Description

* 50 more tracks drawn from Bob Dylan's third season of Theme Time Radio Hour and once more it is as eclectic a mix of music as you'll find anywhere.

* Spanning 76 years, it contains artists as diverse as Roy Rogers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Nirvana, Toots & the Maytals, Laura Cantrell, the Mississippi Sheiks - shuffle that lot on your iPod.

* This time there is a nod to the topical collapse of Western capitalism in Joe Mooney's `The Man With $1 Million' and Mel Blanc's irresistibly alliterative (but blunt) `Money'. Speaking of Mel, Ace even got Pat Boone to write the sleeve note for that one. A prize for the first person to guess why!

* The introduction has been written by the novelist and poet Lavinia Greenlaw, whose book "The Importance of Music To Girls", is a must-read for music lovers and we have a spectacular array of annotators this time, ranging from the man who introduced us to the blues, Paul Oliver, to Sir Tim Rice on Elvis (Presley) and Elvis (Costello) on Dave Bartholomew's `The Monkey (Speaks His Mind)' that he once covered.

* Also on the subject of Elvis: is this the first compilation with both Elvises on it? And if so what a coincidence that the only known cover by Elvis C of Elvis P is `Little Sister' and the original is on here.

* The track everyone is hollerin' for is Jerry Lee Lewis as Iago singing William Shakespeare from the Jack Good musical Catch My Soul - `Lust Of The Blood' will still not be believed, even when heard.

* Once more Ace have a fantastic array of illustrations for the package, including a previously unseen shot of the New Boots and Panties LP cover to illustrate `Sweet Gene Vincent', and the photo of Annie Ross with her then boyfriend Lenny Bruce that illustrates `Twisted' is just the hippest.

* Ace are making available a very groovy outer case to house all 3 volumes of Theme Time...so why not purchase the two previous volumes if you haven't already done so...

I don't like Bob Dylan and didn't hear the radio show so this was an impulse purchase which I bought because of the music. I certainly haven't been disappointed. With tracks from 1935 to 2010 (a never before released Jerry Lee Lewis track) this covers a large range of styles and artists. Some are familiar Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Crickets, Ian Drury etc., some completely unknown at least to me, Wild Tchoupitoulas, Oscar Aleman and several others. Stand out tracks include Bessie Banks "Go Now", Toots and the Maytals "54-46 That's My Number" and Sarah Vaughan "Nice Work If You Can Get It" but they are all worth a listen. There's even Roy Rogers for those of us of a certain age who remember Saturday morning pictures, no Trigger tough.

The packaging and booklet are of Ace's usual high standard with excellent sound. My only small gripe is that the front cover with it's reference to your host Bob Dylan is a bit misleading, he's not here and although it tells you on the back that you need to refer to the radio show to hear him it's not very clear. All in all a great selection of music covering a number of genres, buy it you won't regret it.

Three strikes and out 30 Nov 2010
By Richard
The final CD in this series-that is until they put out a box set called Songs missed off....
A lot of unknown stuff here not all of which works-I could have done without Nirvana or Ian Dury

Time to call it quits 16 Jan 2011
By Luigi Facotti - Published on Amazon.com

While Ace's take on Theme Time Radio Hour provided access to a number of gems, not the least of which was Mary Gauthier's incredible "I Drink" this third two-disc set is far less eclectic with a number of tracks - Elvis' "Little Sister", Bessie Banks "Go Now", The Crickets' original of "I Fought The Law", together with the Fats Domino and Willie Nelson tracks widely available. While there are obscurities like Jerry Lee Lewis' "Lust of the Blood", these are forgettable rather than unheard gems. So, with the apparent decision to call it quits at Volume 3, Ace will move its formidable talents onto other activities - including a planned 2011 CD of unissued Stax tracks from Booker T. and the MGs.

Not what I expected 24 Jan 2011

I was expecting the "Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour," not just the music he selected for the show. I was very disappointed. Bob Dylan was not "hosting" anything on the CD.
