All the best tracks recorded by Them are here in one short CD, only thirteen but all classics. John Tracy's 1987 sleeve notes make fascinating reading and explain a lot about why their music is so dynamic and gripping. Van Morrison was the steadfast heart of the group for a year and a half while personnel came and went, but eventually even he became dispirited with being exploited and fled to the US.
The CD is worth buying just for the anthemic 'Gloria' and 'Baby Please Don't Go', but then listen to the impassioned 'I put a Spell on You', 'Stormy Monday', 'Richard Cory', and then the others are almost as good, 'The Story of Them' with its irony and the in-joke of 'Here Comes the Night'. And all the rest are worthy of inclusion with their dark humour and rebellion, I just wish there were more - some of their early tracks were never released.
This brings back so many memories of the sixties, and the raw freshness makes a welcome change from the over-produced modern pop. Fewer than half the tracks are proper stereo, but being lost in the music one just doesn't notice.
A definite 5*
