Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Among Thelonious Monk's long stays at New York's legendary Five Spot was a six-month period in 1957 with possibly his most brilliant band, with John Coltrane finding fuel in Monk's music for his harmonic explorations. The quartet only recorded three studio tracks: a sublime reading of Monk's ballad "Ruby, My Dear"; a loping version of "Nutty"; and a stunning version of "Trinkle Tinkle" on which Trane's tenor mirrors Monk's piano part. The CD is completed with outtakes from an octet session that joined Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins and an extended solo version of "Functional." --Stuart Broomer

These electrifying sessions recorded in 1957(but not released until 1961) with pianist Thelonious Monk and saxophonist John Coltrane feature the only three studio tracks by the Monk-Coltrane-Wilbur Ware-Shadow Wilson quartet that played at New York's Five Spot in 1957. In addition there are two Monk septet recordings with John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins(tenor saxes); Gigi Gryce(alto sax); Ray Copeland(trumpet); Wilbur Ware(bass) & Art Blakey(drums). Completing the album is a Monk solo blues 'Functional' plus the first recording of Monk & Trane together on 'Monk's Mood'.
The music is intense and powerful and Coltrane's playing evolved rapidly after his meeting with Monk.
This OJC remastered 2010 edition with notes by producer Orrin Keepnews is an absolutely essential album for any Monk or Trane enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have to agree - this is a brilliant album 13 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
Short at just over 37 minutes but don't let that put you off. The two tracks with Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins - Off Minor and Epistrophy - are the stand out tracks for me. It's a real pity that this and the Live at Carnegie Hall disc is the entire legacy of these jazz giants.
