Billy Mercer, a man of indomitable spirit and character joins the Great War and witnesses the death of everyone he cares for, in battles of horrifying carnage, time and time again. Repeatedly promoted and decorated due to his fighting ability, Mercer finds more tragedy and approaches despair until the love of an attached woman almost saves him. Upon discovery he is sent back again to face his demons at the front line. Can his knack of surviving death hold out this final time? 'Their Fathers Lied' A novel on love and death during the Great War

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic story!, 24 Jan 2010
This review is from: Their Fathers Lied (Paperback)
Their fathers lied was a brilliant read. Very graphic in parts in the descriptions of life in the 1st World War yet an easy read for those who may think it's a just a war book. This will appeal to anyone not only interested in wartime but also ladies will love this too! I cried twice! Billy Mercer is a character we'd all love to meet! Would make a smashing film! Very recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but gripping, 23 Jan 2011

Linda Stamschror (KELLOGG, MINNESOTA, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Their Fathers Lied (Paperback)
I bought about this book because I am a friend of the author but also because it was about WWI which is interesting to me. However, I was not disappointed-on the contrary. I was immediately captured by the main character, Billy Mercer. The book shows how an ordinary man placed in a certain situation becomes extraordinary. The war scenes made me uncomfortable as they should have. Those scenes reminded me of the war scenes in "Legends of the Fall". And, they made me very sad for all of the young men who had to experience such a horrible fate. I cried and just sat for some time at the end of the book. No one can read it without crying.

Their Fathers Lied is a gritty page turner and could use a bit of polish but the lack of polish actually added to my interest. It may not be of interest for some women but women should go outside of their normal reading material and read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine debut by James Thurbin, 19 Jan 2011
This review is from: Their Fathers Lied (Paperback)
I once read a review of another debut novel called The Fencing Master by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. It was described as having, among other attributes, the perfect ending.

James Thurbin's first book, Their Fathers Lied, has many of the same qualities.

The characters are well painted and the story of their experiences in the First World War is described using modern language which makes it seem all the more real.
All the detail is well researched and documented and I felt I was there in the trenches.
It is a short book but it packs several punches (quire literally) and the way James' character meets his perfect end very nearly brought a tear to my eye.
I understand a second novel is in the process of being written and I cannot wait to read it.

Well done James.
