Product Description

Review

'An excellent update on Romania after Ceau?escu, with enough historical background, especially on the legacy of underdevelopment, to make contemporary Romania comprehensible for a Western reader A... his most original contribution is the discussion on international assistance to Romania. Gallagher criticises both the IMF, for its contribution to the failure of Romania's 1997-2000 governments, and the EU for its lack of deeper understanding of what Europeanization means for Romania.' -Alina Mungiu-Pippidi, Romanian Journal of Political Science 'One of the remarkable features of this book is that it offers a comprehensive picture of 'modern' Romania, but never forgets to deliver unagitated, detailed facts for the analysis it promises to deliver. This book is about Romania, but at the same time it is a story about Eastern Europe which raises a lot of broader issues about governance, democracy-and ultimately history and time. Tom Gallagher's timely anlysis...helps to understand the particular situation in Romania, but at the same time the 'bigger picture' and deficiencies of the Western European model of governance and assistance in South-Eastern Europe'. -Tobias Denskus, (Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, UK), in Balkan Academic News, 29 3 October 2005 'Tom Gallagher's book shows a very good grasp of popular aspirations, politico-economic phenomena, and the priorities A... of Romanian politicians A... His critique A... must be seen as that of a political scientist cum historian who is far from indifferent to social injustice, economic backwardness and the politico-adminstrative standards of contemporary Romania. Theft of A Nation is a notable undertaking. The reflections and insights deriving from the vast material consulted suggests to me that this book is a first-hand reference work that merits the attention of both Romanian and European elites'. -Victor Neumann (Professor of History, University of Timisoara), in 22 Magazine, Nr 808, 30 August 2005, Bucharest.

I think the other reviews of this book are a bit harsh. I have been to Romania various times, and worked in the country for a few months in the early 1990s, and I found this book a very useful guide to recent politics there. I read it during my latest trip to the country in January 2007 and found it a good guide. It is well written and lively. It is not always easy finding good, recent books on Romania in English, but this is an excellent starting point.

Quite frankly, I enjoyed the book and was sorry it finished when it did. Obviously one has to end somewhere, but I look forward to an analysis of the last couple of years from the same author. Romania is changing so quickly and yet the same people who are described in Tom`s book are visible in each strata, hanging on in there and causing all sorts of turmoil. Tom ended with the election of Traian Basescu as President, a man who seems prepared to upturn some pretty heavy stones, and I just hope that the old guard leave him alone long enough for the coming of the EU in 2007. As a resident in Romania, I find the people are astonishingly prepared to welcome Western Europeans into their folds, not just for possible benefits, but because they have unusually outgoing hearts. Yes, there are corrupt individuals, in government and out of it, but hey, if English politicians can lie through their teeth to go to war over oil, Romania`s problem people seem easy to manage in comparison! Tom, keep up the good work, and let me know how you see the current scenario by creating a future scripting.

Romania is a country plagued by the workings of a a mediocre post 1989 governing elite and a by the heritage of a brutal communist regime. On top of that, scholarship on post-communist Romania in the West arises only lukewarm responses among political scientists.
Tom Gallagher's book does nothing to improve the state of the literature. A good example of bad scholarship, Theft of a Nation is a collection of stereotypes, "fluffy" research design, glaring biases, shoddy evidence and misunderstandings. Unlike in his work on Portugal, professor Gallagher lapses into a combination of descriptivism and Orientalizing declamations disguised as solidarity rhetoric when it comes to analyzing this unfortunate country.
