Review

"Decent and independent theatre websites are few and far between. Theatremonkey.com is one of those rare exceptions." --The Times

"Quirky guide run by a smart-alecky London Theater buff" --Desktop Traveller - Wall Street Journal

"[Theatremonkey shows you] where to sit and not to sit at each of London's theatres." --ThisIsMoney.co.uk

From the Publisher

For almost ten years, Theatremonkey.com has been one of the leading online communities for West End audiences. Every day, thousands of theatregoers visit the website to get advice and leave comments on the latest shows. Now for the first time, this collective knowledge has been made available in a handy pocket sized guide.

Theatremonkey: A Guide to London's West End has been written by Steve Rich, the man behind the massively popular website. This practical guide will help you find the seats that are worth choosing (as well as which to avoid), the safest places to buy tickets from, and where to find them at bargain prices.

One of the main features of the book are the colour-coded seating plans that highlight where the best places are to sit in every part of each theatre - and any problems that might arise, row-by-row and sometimes even seat-by-seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential book for Theatre goers! 19 Dec 2009
By Cecilia
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first discovered Theatremonkey's website some years ago and to my delight they have recently published this book. It has all the same great information but is easy enough to slip into a handbag or luggage if you are doing some serious theatre going on London's West End (ideal for people visiting London perhaps for the first time and want to make the most of theatre visits).

With this book to hand, you'll never buy a ticket for a show again sitting in front of a column or only being able to see half the stage (I did it once! That was before I discovered Theatremonkey)

It has a diagram for the seating plan of each theatre in London with advice for best value tickets, best views, best seats for people needing more legroom etc

The book is divided into five sections -

(1) "Planning an Expedition" -(What's on Where? What's to See? Which to choose? When to go? Which seat?)
(2) "Ticket Buying Jungle" -(includes Box office basics etc)
(3) "Native Wisdom" - (includes Beating 'sold out' signs etc)
(4) "Theatre by Theatre Guide" - (seating plans and advice)
(5) "Other London Concert and Performance Venues" - (includes Shakespeare's Globe, O2 and Wembley Arenas etc)

Not only packed with excellent advice, it's fun to read with touches of humour. I've already bought extra copies as gifts and if you know anyone wanting to treat themselves to a show then this book is the ideal starting point. It's a very useful addition to anyone's bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading For First Time Theatregoers 2 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
The book is basically the website in a handy dandy book format with extra bonuses thrown in for good measure, it's split into five sections which explain how to get into a sold out show, how to get discounts, the difference between ticket agencies and touts, how to behave in a theatre and so much more.

To make this review clear I will discuss the book section by section (so we don't miss anything out). So without further ado...

Section 1: Planning A Visit
------------------------------
This section discusses where to find out whats on, very helpful advice on how to choose a show which is expecially helpful for first time theatregoers to help make sure you pick a show you will actually enjoy plus advice on which days to seasons are the quietest - helping you get better seats.

This section also includes descriptions of the main seating areas in a theatre and what each means in terms of sightlines, price and more.

Section 2: Ticket Buying Jungle
---------------------------------
If you want to find out how to get into sold out shows, how tickets are sold including the potential pit falls and how tickets are allocated (revealing a couple of things that I wasn't aware of) this is the section you should turn to.

You will find helpful advice on where to book tickets and what to look out for to avoid ticket touts. There are some real horror stories included here (maybe a little over the top but still my review) which have resulted in a number of ruined evenings - don't let it be you next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Theatre Monkey review 12 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
Excellent guide to London Theatres, full of interesting snippets. A pity it's too big to fit in a jacket pocket.
Best part - the colour coded seating plans flagging the seats to avoid and those offering best value.
Worst part - Holborn tube is shown in completely the wrong place on the maps at the back of the book - very misleading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where has this been all my life?! 15 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a West End theatre lover I have always attempted to have a seating plan in front of me when booking tickets, whether over the phone or on the net. In the past this was a laborious task as would have to do many Google searches to find a plan and very often they weren't accurate or too small to see the seat numbers. After all, they are not cheap and to leave it to the ticket agency's chance is not good enough for me. Then I was reading my weekly e-mail from Martin Lewis (Money Saving Expert) and he recommended the Theatre monkey website. Since then I never looked back.

Everything I wanted in one place, accurate reviews, photographic directions (if you're like me who gets lost trying to find my car on a supermarket car park!)and all in a fully accessible format. Could it get any better I thought? Well, it did, with the arrival of this book.

The author clearly has an in depth knowledge of all things theatrical/West End and this is portrayed in the book. It is easily read and indexed, instead of the usually high brow, over the top almost superior language of some theatre guidebooks, this is clear and concise. The 3D map is so useful. As I used mine so much I had to purchase a second copy as when it's in and out of your bag over a period of time, like any book worth its salt, it gets worn. I would HIGHLY recommend this book and the website to all and offer sincere thanks to the team who put it together.
