Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943 is a new game in the Theatre of War series of tactical World War II simulations and is considered to be one of the most detailed simulations of modern warfare ever played on a PC.

The Battle of Kursk lasted for forty nine days, from July 5 until August 23, 1943 and has made its way into history as one of the most crucial conflicts of WWII. It was the last strategic offensive the Germans were able to mount in the east. The resulting decisive Soviet victory gave the Red Army the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.

2.0 out of 5 stars An epic battle - in more ways than one 30 Sep 2010
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
The battle begins almost immediately, with the installation. My anti-virus software kept flagging up alerts regardless of what I told it - eventually I uninstalled the AV software* and was finally able to complete the installation of 'Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943'.

Problems didn't stop there though. I had already checked the developers website for updates so I knew I was up to date, but the auto-updater decided to error rather than tell me this. On to the game...

Minimum specs are somewhat high: a dual-core processor, 4gb ram, 512mb 8800 nvidia graphics card (or equivalent ATI). My PC only just bettered them having a quad core chip - as such the default graphical settings were low, I accepted them (after all you can change them later...) and played the tutorial level.

Not surprisingly, given the low graphical settings, the game looked dull and lifeless but things moved around smoothly enough so I decided to quit and notch up the settings. After much phaffing around and a good deal of confusion I realised the in-game options for changing the graphics don't do a damn thing. There is in fact a separate options.exe in the install folder you run separately if you want to change things like screen resolution. Handy.

Ok, graphics settings ramped up and back to the game. It no longer ran quite as smoothly (no surprise) and it still looked dull and lifeless, only less so. Oh well, maybe showing Jerry a thing or two about tank warfare will put a smile on my face. The actual game, when you finally get to it is a fairly standard RTS game but on quite large maps. Drag select a bunch of units and right click an enemy to have them attack it etc. Units look authentic and if you know your tanks you'll be able to identify T-34's, Tiger 1's and Panzer IV's easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning evolution of the war game 18 Oct 2010
By Clever Spud TOP 500 REVIEWER
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Believe the other reviews. This is a game for serious war-gamers, and it is quite superb.

The engine used is incredibly detailed, modelling just about every aspect you can think of.

I can understand the frustration that some people have had. This isn't supposed to be an easy, simple game to master. But if you stick at it, and replay the tutorials several times before embarking on the game proper, then your study will be rewarded.

It's really quite something when the battle turns your way and you finally drive that heavy German armour off the battlefield. Cherish these moments, because if you're anything like me you're going to experience a lot of bitter defeat amidst those elusive sweet victories.

Controlling your troops becomes second nature in time, BUT never feels completely fluid and even after several hours play under my belt I still sometimes felt they had a mind of their own, and of course they do to an extent due to their AI.

Bad points - this game did NOT get on with Avira Anti-Virus software and triggered a couple of false positives during installation, and later on as well. Eventually I switched to Avast and everything was fine after that.

Online activation was easy, though not something I really approve of.

Tremendous game by any measure but particularly if you're a grognard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Descent RTS. 14 Oct 2010
By Astore Stargazer VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I used to be a huge fan of RTS games and at one time I had pretty much played them all, Age of Empires, Empire Earrh, Rise of Nations, all of the Total War series, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and Empire at war and so many more. Having not played one since I became an avid online gamer I was quite looking forward to taking a trip down memory lane to see what Kursk 2 had to offer, and to get a feel for what a modern day WWII rts feels like.

I wasn't dissaspointed, the overall game play wasn't too complex after a few short tutorials I was under way battling the Germans from a Soviet perspective. To my surprise there is a huge variance in the types of units (over 60 in total) available and the level of unit detail my ATI 4870 card produces is excellent. The game is not just centered around tank units and troops though, you have the ability to call in air strikes which really does add a much welcome dimension to the game particularly when playing online.

The only slight downside to the game is that it is centered around the battle of Kursk which lasted a total of 48 days. However, with 2 historical campaigns and 18 missions to get your teeth into this rts does keep you coming back for more, not to mention an online option that allows you to ally yourself with other players.

A really enjoyable and fun game let down possibly by the lack of longevity.

Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
This is a real wasted opportunity of a game. Given the subject matter, the greatest armoured clash in military history, and a sympathetic Russian production team, this could have been a real PC gaming classic. Sadly, despite advantages in scenario, the execution of this game it is just too clunky, unsophisticated, and erratic to do justice to the ideas it aspires to.

I think any experienced war gamer used to more sophisticated programs will quite simply not have the patience to persevere with this. I found the graphics jerky and unclear, and like some of the reviews above, I found the supporting material vague and unhelpful. I put this game back in its box, knowing he was destined for the charity shop, and that I'd never play it again. And to be honest, I felt rather sad, knowing that the producers of this game had missed out on a great opportunity.

If you're buying it for a pound at a car boot sale, give it a go and see what you think.
