Product Description

Product Description

Beginning with a brief history of the use of sound in the theatre and its development the author then describes different sound systems used in theatre, practical considerations and working in different types of theatre. He discusses the artistic input involved, working with the director and other designers and the production process - putting together cue sheets, desk plots, operating the show and rehearsals. He pays particular attention to musical theatre looking at microphones, piano techs, loudspeaker rigs and operating a musical. In addition there are chapters on sound effects, the recording studio, MIDI and finally a section explaining the physics and maths involved in sound. There is also a bibliography and online reference sources.

First Sentence
Almost all theatre productions involve sound; in its most basic form, it is the sound of the actor's voice, and even the Ancient Greeks used a form of processing via masks to distort and project the voice of the performer. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible for aspiring theatre sound engineers., 25 July 2010
This review is from: Theatre Sound (Stage and Costume) (Backstage) (Paperback)
The best book about sound in theatre, simple as that. Hugely useful information for anyone wanting to work as a sound designer, technician, operator, engineer, composer. Recommended reading for directors and performers too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Theatre Sound, 26 May 2002
By J Goldsmith "2nd yr. grad student" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Theatre Sound (Theatre Arts (Routledge Paperback)) (Paperback)
John Leonard's Theatre Sound is an excellent read for everyone from the beginner to an advanced sound designer. The refreshing material in his book isn't overloaded with technical jargon, but goes over everything for a full understanding of the subject. It's also loaded with thoughts on theory, from sound effect design to speaker localization. A very good read, and highly recommended!
